Project Controls Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project controls engineer in California?
Most project controls engineers in California start with a bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field, then build hands-on experience in cost or schedule roles on capital projects. California does not license the project controls title directly, but employers strongly prefer candidates who hold AACE International certifications such as the Certified Cost Technician or Planning and Scheduling Professional, or PMI credentials. Progress from junior cost or schedule analyst roles into full project controls positions over several years of California project experience.
Which companies hire project controls engineers in California?
Employers hiring project controls engineers in California right now include BKF Engineers, Apple, and Joby Aviation, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large aerospace, defense, and infrastructure sectors mean that federal contractors and engineering-procurement-construction firms consistently post the highest volume of openings across the state.
Which California cities have the most project controls engineer jobs?
San Jose, Santa Clara, and Los Angeles have the most project controls engineer openings in California. Los Angeles drives the largest share through its concentration of aerospace primes, transit megaprojects, and commercial construction, while Sacramento's openings reflect state agency infrastructure programs, and San Diego benefits from defense contractor and biotech campus development activity.
Are there remote project controls engineer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 20% of project controls engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that much of the role involves on-site coordination, field data collection, and direct interface with construction or program teams. The analytical tasks, such as cost modeling, reporting, and schedule updates, are most likely to be performed remotely on a partial or rotational basis.
How can I get hired as a project controls engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior cost engineer or schedule analyst role, which large California contractors and agencies hire for directly out of a construction management or engineering program. Employers like Bechtel and AECOM run new-graduate development programs in California that rotate candidates through cost, scheduling, and change management functions. An AACE Student Membership and completion of the Certified Cost Technician exam before graduation gives candidates a measurable edge. Adjacent roles such as project coordinator, estimator's assistant, or planning analyst at California infrastructure firms are also common stepping stones.
Where can I find and apply to project controls engineer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to project controls engineer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Find the roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to each one.
