Tips for Your Proposal Manager Job Search
Tailor your resume to RFP language
Pull exact phrases from each job posting and mirror them in your resume. Proposal managers are evaluated on precision, so a resume that echoes the solicitation's terminology signals you already think in RFP format before you walk in.
Quantify win rates and volume handled
Employers want to know how many proposals you managed simultaneously and what percentage moved to award. Replace vague claims with specifics: number of submissions per quarter, page counts, and team sizes you coordinated across each pursuit.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists proposal manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Highlight compliance and deadline discipline
Government and defense proposal roles screen hard for candidates who have never missed a submission deadline. Call out specific compliance frameworks you have worked within, such as FAR or DFARS, and name the volume and cadence of deadlines you managed.
Prepare a writing sample before interviews
Many hiring panels ask for an executive summary or proposal section on short notice. Having a redacted, de-identified sample ready shows you can produce polished, client-facing prose under pressure, not just manage a process.
Negotiate based on contract portfolio complexity
Proposal managers who own complex, multi-volume federal or commercial bids command higher offers than those handling single-page submissions. Frame your negotiation around the dollar value and technical complexity of pursuits you have led, not years of tenure alone.
Proposal Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most proposal managers?
The companies hiring the most proposal managers right now include DLR, HDR, and Veeva Systems, with the largest share of openings in Maryland, Texas, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Defense contractors, government IT integrators, and large professional services firms consistently post the highest volume of openings.
How many proposal manager jobs are remote?
About 46% of proposal manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the document-heavy, collaboration-tool-driven nature of the work. Fully remote opportunities are most concentrated in commercial sectors such as SaaS and healthcare IT, while federal defense roles more often require on-site or cleared facility access.
How do you become a proposal manager?
Most proposal managers start in a supporting role such as proposal coordinator, technical writer, or business development analyst, building familiarity with the full bid lifecycle. From there, taking ownership of smaller proposals, earning an APMP certification, and developing a portfolio of submitted work are the most direct steps toward a manager title. Experience with federal RFPs or industry-specific compliance frameworks accelerates the path considerably.
Can you get hired as a proposal manager with little experience?
Entry-level roles exist under titles like proposal coordinator or bid specialist, and they are the standard starting point for candidates without direct proposal management experience. Strong technical writing, project coordination skills, and familiarity with tools like SharePoint or Loopio make a candidate competitive. Volunteering to support a proposal effort at your current employer, even informally, is one of the most effective ways to build a concrete work sample quickly.
What does the proposal manager interview process look like?
Most proposal manager interviews include a screening call focused on your proposal volume and deadline experience, followed by a panel interview with business development, technical, and operations stakeholders. A writing exercise or case study asking you to outline or edit a proposal section is common at mid-level roles and above. Some employers also ask behavioral questions structured around specific pursuit scenarios, win outcomes, and how you managed cross-functional contributors under a hard deadline.
Where can I find and apply to proposal manager jobs?
You can find and apply to proposal manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your experience level, sector preference, and location, then apply directly to each listing without leaving the platform.
