What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in psychotherapist jobs.
- Active state licensure such as LCSW, LPC, LMFT, or licensed psychologist
- Master's or doctoral degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or a related clinical field
- Minimum supervised clinical hours as required by state licensure board
- Proficiency with electronic health record systems for documentation and treatment planning
- Experience delivering individual and group therapy using evidence-based modalities
- Ability to conduct biopsychosocial assessments and develop individualized treatment plans
Tips for Your Psychotherapist Job Search
Tailor your resume to licensure requirements
List your license type, state of licensure, and license number prominently near the top of your resume. Employers screen for specific credentials like LCSW, LPC, or LMFT before reading anything else, so burying that information costs you callbacks.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists psychotherapist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Highlight your clinical modality expertise
Job postings for psychotherapists often filter by treatment approach, so name your modalities explicitly: CBT, DBT, EMDR, motivational interviewing, or somatic therapy. Vague phrases like 'evidence-based practice' are not searchable and don't differentiate you.
Target postings by population served
Psychotherapist roles are frequently segmented by client population: children and adolescents, adults, couples, veterans, or substance use. Filtering your search by population lets you apply to roles where your supervised hours and clinical experience already align with what the employer needs.
Prepare a clinical case presentation for interviews
Many psychotherapist interviews include a case conceptualization exercise or ask you to walk through a treatment plan. Practice presenting a de-identified case using your primary modality, including diagnosis, treatment goals, interventions chosen, and how you measure progress.
Negotiate supervision toward full licensure
If you're at the associate or pre-licensed level, ask directly whether the employer provides or subsidizes clinical supervision hours. Some postings omit this detail, but it directly affects how quickly you reach independent licensure and what the role is actually worth to your career.
Psychotherapist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most psychotherapists?
The companies hiring the most psychotherapists right now include Sun River Health, Atrium Health, and OSF HealthCare, with the largest share of openings in New York, Illinois, and Minnesota, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated in both large health systems and telehealth providers expanding their licensed clinician networks.
How many psychotherapist jobs are remote?
About 8% of psychotherapist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, driven largely by telehealth platforms that deliver therapy via video. Fully remote roles are most common for adult individual therapy, while positions involving minors, intensive outpatient programs, or crisis services are more likely to require in-person presence.
How do you become a psychotherapist?
You become a psychotherapist by earning a graduate degree in clinical social work, counseling, marriage and family therapy, or psychology, then completing supervised post-graduate clinical hours as required by your state licensure board. After accumulating those hours, you pass a licensure exam specific to your credential type, such as the ASWB for social workers or the NCE for counselors, and apply for your full independent license.
Can you get hired as a psychotherapist with little experience?
Yes, many employers hire psychotherapists at the associate or pre-licensed level, provided you hold a graduate degree and are actively accruing supervised hours toward licensure. Community mental health centers, substance use treatment programs, and agency settings are the most likely to hire candidates early in their clinical careers and provide the supervision structure required for licensure.
What does the psychotherapist interview process look like?
The psychotherapist interview process typically starts with a phone screen focused on licensure status and clinical background, followed by a panel or in-person interview with a clinical director or team lead. Many employers include a case conceptualization exercise, asking you to walk through a clinical scenario, discuss your diagnostic reasoning, and explain your treatment approach before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to psychotherapist jobs?
You can find and apply to psychotherapist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search for roles that match your licensure, clinical specialty, and preferred setting, then apply directly to each listing from the same place.
