Description
Martin Marietta is looking for a Mix Design Specialist to join their Quality Control team. The Mix Design Specialist is responsible for developing, testing, and optimizing asphalt mix designs to meet MnDOT specifications and project requirements. This role ensures consistent plant production quality through oversight of materials, processes, and compliance with state and federal standards. The position plays a critical role in ensuring asphalt mixtures meet performance, durability, and safety criteria. This is a union position and membership in the IUOE Local 49 is required.
Key Responsibilities
Mix Design & Quality Control
- Develop, evaluate, and maintain asphalt mix designs in accordance with MnDOT specifications.
- Perform laboratory testing including aggregate gradation, asphalt content analysis, volumetric properties, and performance tests.
- Adjust mix designs and plant settings to optimize product quality, cost efficiency, and performance.
- Maintain documentation and records of mix designs, test results, and compliance reports.
Plant Production Support
- Monitor plant production processes to ensure adherence to approved mix designs.
- Collaborate with plant operators to troubleshoot production issues and ensure consistent product quality.
- Observe stockpile management and ensure materials meet required specifications.
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure all mix designs and production practices comply with MnDOT, ASTM, and AASHTO standards.
- Coordinate with MnDOT representatives and inspectors during plant audits and project approvals.
Continuous Improvement
- Recommend improvements in materials, processes, and testing procedures.
- Stay informed of industry trends, new technologies, and evolving MnDOT requirements.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and internal audits.
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, Materials Science, or related field OR equivalent industry experience.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in asphalt mix design, plant operations, or materials testing.
- Valid US drivers license.
Certifications (MnDOT Required)
- Must possess or be able to obtain the following MnDOT certifications:
- APTC – Aggregate Production Technician Certification
- BPTC – Bituminous Plant Technician Certification
- BMDC – Bituminous Mix Design Certification
- BSIC – Bituminous Street Inspector Certification
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of asphalt materials, aggregate properties, and mix design methodologies (Superpave, Marshall, etc.)
- Knowledge of MnDOT specifications and QA/QC procedures.
- Proficiency with laboratory testing equipment and data analysis tools.
- Familiarity with plant control systems and production processes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working directly with MnDOT projects or similar DOT agencies.
- Background in field inspection or construction quality assurance.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
We are excited to share the base salary rate for this position is $47.66. Conditions and terms of employment and benefits are in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement for the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 49.
