Tips for Your Rehabilitation Psychologist Job Search
Tailor your CV to each setting
A VA hospital hiring panel weighs different competencies than an inpatient rehab unit. Highlight neuropsychological assessment experience for medical settings and behavior management protocols for community rehab programs. Generic psychology CVs rarely make the short list.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists rehabilitation psychologist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Document your supervised hours precisely
Many postings require a specific number of hours in rehabilitation-focused supervision. List your internship and postdoctoral hours by setting and population served, not just total count, so hiring managers can verify fit against their state licensure and credentialing requirements immediately.
Name your assessment battery experience explicitly
Employers want to see which neuropsychological instruments you have administered, not just that you have testing experience. List tools like the RBANS, WAIS, and MoCA by name in your resume's skills section so your application clears automated screening systems.
Prepare interdisciplinary case examples for interviews
Rehabilitation psychology interviews almost always include a scenario question about collaborating with physiatrists, occupational therapists, or case managers. Prepare two or three specific cases where you contributed to an interdisciplinary team decision and be ready to walk through your clinical reasoning.
Negotiate start date around licensure timelines
If you are completing a postdoctoral fellowship, clarify your anticipated licensure date before accepting an offer. Some employers will hold a position for a few weeks while others require full licensure at start. Raising this early prevents last-minute complications on both sides.
Rehabilitation Psychologist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most rehabilitation psychologists?
The companies hiring the most rehabilitation psychologists right now include University of Utah, SUNY Upstate Medical University, and The MetroHealth System, with the largest share of openings in Ohio, Utah, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. VA medical centers and large health systems account for a significant portion of active postings.
How many rehabilitation psychologist jobs are remote?
About 0% of rehabilitation psychologist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with telehealth options most common in outpatient counseling and consultation roles. Direct neuropsychological assessment, inpatient rehabilitation work, and positions at VA facilities are nearly always on-site due to hands-on clinical and testing requirements.
How do you become a rehabilitation psychologist?
You earn a doctoral degree in psychology from an APA-accredited program, complete an APA-accredited internship with a rehabilitation focus, and finish a postdoctoral fellowship in a rehabilitation setting. After that you obtain state licensure as a psychologist. Board Certification in Rehabilitation Psychology through ABPP strengthens your candidacy for senior or specialized positions.
How do you get hired as a rehabilitation psychologist with little experience?
Focus on postdoctoral fellowship positions at inpatient rehabilitation hospitals or VA facilities, since those roles are structured for early-career psychologists and provide supervised hours toward licensure. Highlight any practicum rotations in rehabilitation, neurology, or chronic illness populations. Demonstrating familiarity with specific assessment instruments and interdisciplinary team models makes a meaningful difference when your independent clinical hours are limited.
What does the rehabilitation psychologist interview process look like?
Most hiring processes include an initial screening call with HR or a recruiter, followed by a clinical interview with the psychology department and key interdisciplinary team members. You will typically be asked to discuss a complex case, describe your assessment approach, and explain how you collaborate with physiatrists and therapy staff. Some employers also require a brief presentation or a review of your postdoctoral training portfolio before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to rehabilitation psychologist jobs?
You can find and apply to rehabilitation psychologist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from healthcare systems, VA facilities, inpatient rehab centers, and academic programs across the United States. Find roles that match your specialization and experience level and apply directly to each listing.
