The position is full-time and renewable based on performance and funding.
Outstanding U of A benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance plans; life insurance and disability programs; paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; U of A/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; retirement plans; access to U of A recreation and cultural activities; and more!
The University of Arizona has been recognized for our innovative work-life programs.
Duties & Responsibilities
-
Independently plan, design, and carry out experiments on bottom-up growth of atomically precise graphene nanoribbons, including operation of ultra-high-vacuum growth systems such as molecular beam epitaxy (MBE).
-
Lead the design and execution of nanoscale device fabrication and characterization and characterization of GNR-based electronic and sensing devices, including cleanroom processing (e-beam lithography, metallization, etching) and electrical/structural measurement at room and cryogenic temperatures.
-
Independently analyze and interpret experimental data using surface science and spectroscopy techniques (e.g., STM/STS, Raman, XPS); prepare peer-reviewed manuscripts, technical reports, and conference presentations.
-
Train and mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers on UHV growth systems, nanofabrication tools, and experimental protocols; oversee equipment maintenance, safety, and day-to-day lab operations.
-
Contribute to research proposals, progress reports, and collaborations with internal and external partners; participate in strategic planning of GNR research directions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-
Strong working knowledge of the growth and characterization of low-dimensional carbon materials and 2D materials.
-
Hands-on competence with ultra-high-vacuum deposition (MBE or MBE-class) and standard cleanroom processes.
-
Ability to plan and run multi-step experiments independently and to troubleshoot when established procedures do not exist.
-
Clear scientific writing and presentation; record of peer-reviewed publications.
-
Ability to mentor junior researchers and to work effectively with collaborators inside and outside the University.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree, or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional-level experience.
Minimum of five (5) years of relevant research experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
-
Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
-
Hands-on experience with molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) or MBE-class ultra-high-vacuum growth.
-
Research experience in the synthesis of low-dimensional carbon nanostructures (e.g., graphene, graphene nanoribbons) by vapor-phase or surface-catalyzed methods.
-
Experience with nanoscale device fabrication of low-dimensional materials in a cleanroom environment.
-
Experience with transfer of low-dimensional materials and their integration into transistors or sensors.
-
Track record of first-author peer-reviewed publications in low-dimensional materials or nanoelectronics.
-
Experience contributing to or leading grant or user-facility proposals.
