School Counselor Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a school counselor in Michigan?
To become a school counselor in Michigan, you must earn a master's degree in school counseling and obtain a Michigan School Counselor certificate through the Michigan Department of Education. The certification requires completion of an approved counselor education program, a supervised field experience in a school setting, and passage of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification school counselor content exam. Applications are submitted through the Michigan Online Educator Certification System.
Which companies hire school counselors in Michigan?
Employers hiring school counselors in Michigan right now include Michigan Association of School Boards, Ann Arbor Public Schools, and GPS Solutions, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Michigan's large urban districts and intermediate school districts, known as ISDs, are among the most consistent sources of full-time openings across the state.
Which Michigan cities have the most school counselor jobs?
Macomb, Ann Arbor, and Holt have the most school counselor openings in Michigan. Detroit leads because of the sheer size of its public school system, while Grand Rapids and Lansing see strong demand driven by growing district enrollments and the presence of regional intermediate school districts that serve dozens of surrounding communities.
Are there remote school counselor jobs in Michigan?
Yes, but they're rare. School counseling is fundamentally an in-person role built around direct student contact, small group sessions, and on-site crisis response. About 25% of school counselor openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of November 2026, and those positions are typically limited to virtual charter schools or certain post-secondary advising roles rather than traditional K-12 district jobs.
How can I get hired as a school counselor in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a counseling internship or practicum placement within a Michigan district while completing your master's program, then converting that relationship into a hire. Michigan's intermediate school districts and larger urban systems like Detroit Public Schools Community District and Kent ISD regularly bring on new graduates for associate counselor and counseling intern positions. Holding a completed Michigan School Counselor certificate and experience as a classroom teacher or school social work aide gives candidates a meaningful edge when competing for first-year openings.
Where can I find and apply to school counselor jobs in Michigan?
You can find and apply to school counselor jobs in Michigan on Migrate Mate, which lists current Michigan openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find roles that match your certification level and preferred location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
