About this job: The Float School Nurse collaborates with other school and health care staff to maintain a safe and healthy environment and promote an optimal level of wellness to enhance the educational process of students. The Float School Nurse will travel from school to school, depending on student needs.
Must be willing to be assigned to any school across the district - These positions are based on need, anywhere inside DPS district region.

What You'll Do:
- Prioritizes school health services needs based on length of assignment, and time of year (beginning of the year, mid-year, end of the year)
- Provides training, supervision, and delegation for CNAs UAPs, staff coverage for the health office, and field trips
- Works to provide care coverage for school nurse assignments, as well as for medical dedicated adult support (1:1) assignments
- Works to remove, modify, or reduce health related barriers to learning
- Provides well student care, health care, first aid, immunizations, and assistance to students at assigned school
- Performs screenings for vision, hearing, height and weight, and/or other conditions and makes referrals and follow-ups to primary care giver
- Creates health care plans, and provides expertise for evaluation, review and writing of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and Section 504 Plans, in collaboration with school IEP and Section 504 teams
- Updates and maintains all student health records using District health documentation software systems
- Provides coverage based on school and department needs at schools within the District
- Promote an optimal level of wellness to enhance the educational process of students
- Work to remove, modify or reduce health-related barriers to learning
- Provide well student care, health care, first aid, immunizations and assistance to students at assigned school
- Perform screenings for scoliosis, vision, hearing, height and weight, and/or other conditions and make referrals and follow-up
- Complete, update, and maintain student records (accident reports, health records) using District software systems, and complete and submit reports
- May supervise health paraprofessionals and other health staff in assigned locations
- May participate in extra-duty activities as outlined in the teachers' collective bargaining agreement (this is for coaching, tutoring, or summer programs, etc. for Dept. of Labor laws)
- Other duties as assigned
What You’ll Need:
- Have a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Nursing (If you do NOT have a BSN, you must have three (3) or more years of licensed, practical experience as an RN with school-aged children in order for the district to sign off on a temporary license AND at the time of hire, you must be able to show proof of enrollment in a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing program and agree to finish the program during the next three years, during your probationary period with CDE. This also includes any agency nurses hired.)
- Possess an Active Current Colorado Department of Education Special Service Provider License - School Nurse endorsement - In the State of Colorado. Click here for additional information regarding specific requirements and qualifications (DPS does accept a CDE Application Receipt for 90 days.)
- Be licensed as a Registered Nurse by the State of Colorado.
- Possess a current BLS certificate for Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and be able to renew it as required.
- Valid Colorado driver’s license and ability to meet District insurability requirements is required
- Previous school nursing experience is preferred
- Have a National School Nurse Certification, which is highly desired.
- Knowledge with Google products including Docs, Sheets and Gmail
- Effective time management and organizational skills
- Effective communication skills; both verbal and written
- Strong attention to detail
- Effectively handle multiple demands and competing deadlines
- Professional behavior and the ability to take responsibility for one’s own performance
- Work collaboratively with others on a team
- Aptitude for variety and changing expectations and fast-paced environment
- Ability to travel to multiple schools sites in a week
- Bilingual in Spanish or another language preferred and may be required for some positions
