Job Description Summary: Mountain Song Community School is a Waldorf-inspired charter school dedicated to providing a holistic, developmentally appropriate education that nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and a love for learning. The School Nurse plays a critical role in supporting student health, safety, and readiness to learn by providing direct nursing services, care coordination for students with acute and chronic conditions, health education and prevention support, and guidance to staff and families. The School Nurse also supports schoolwide health systems, including health office procedures, emergency preparedness, communicable disease response, documentation compliance, and appropriate delegation and training when applicable.

Key Responsibilities

Student Health Services & Clinical Care:

• Provide direct nursing care for students with illness or injury, including assessment, triage, first aid, and clinical decision-making within the scope of professional nursing practice.
• Maintain a welcoming and appropriately supervised health office environment that supports student safety, confidentiality, and readiness to return to learning.
• Administer medications and treatments per physician orders, family authorization, and school policy; ensure proper medication storage, documentation, and administration procedures.
• Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) and emergency care plans for students with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, seizures, severe allergies), including emergency medication protocols.
• Support student access needs related to health (as applicable) and collaborate on health-related components of 504 Plans/IEPs as appropriate.
• Maintain confidential student health records in compliance with applicable privacy requirements and school protocols.

Care Coordination & Family/Provider Collaboration:

• Coordinate care across families, healthcare providers, and school teams to ensure continuity of care and safe participation in the school day.
• Communicate with parents/guardians regarding illness/injury, medication needs, and health plans; provide guidance for return-to-school decisions and exclusion criteria when appropriate.
• Support immunization compliance, required health documentation, and follow-up with families as needed in alignment with school requirements and state guidance.
• Coordinate and track health-related documentation timelines (as applicable), including care plan updates and annual renewals.

Health Office Operations & Documentation Systems

• Maintain clear, consistent health office procedures for medication management, incident documentation, and routine nursing workflows.
• Ensure accurate documentation for student visits, medication administration, care provided, parent contact, and follow-up actions.
• Maintain organized records to support school compliance, health office continuity, and any required reviews or audits.

Health & Safety Systems (Schoolwide)

• Serve as a health and safety resource to school leadership, including communicable disease prevention practices and school health procedures.
• Support communicable disease monitoring and response, including coordination of exclusion/return guidance, schoolwide prevention reminders, and collaboration with administration as needed.
• Support emergency preparedness and response protocols (e.g., emergency medications, health components of emergency plans, response collaboration with admin).
• Provide guidance and oversight on nursing delegation to unlicensed assistive personnel when applicable, including training, supervision, and documentation, consistent with state guidance and nurse practice expectations.
• Support staff readiness for student health needs by providing training/refreshers as needed (e.g., allergy response, EpiPen, seizure response, diabetes basics, universal precautions, and health office procedures).

Health Education & Prevention

• Provide age-appropriate health education and prevention support (as assigned) related to hygiene, wellness, injury prevention, and healthy habits.
• Promote a healthy school environment by supporting policies and practices that reduce risk and improve student well-being.

Professionalism & Collaboration

• Demonstrate professionalism in appearance, communication, conduct, and punctuality.
• Collaborate effectively with front office staff, teachers, Student Support teams, and administrators to ensure student health needs are addressed during the school day.
• Maintain required certifications, trainings, and continuing education relevant to school nursing practice.

Additional Responsibilities

• Perform other duties as assigned to support the school’s operations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license (State of Colorado or eligible for Colorado licensure).
• Demonstrated ability to provide nursing care to children and adolescents in a school or pediatric-related setting.
• Strong organization, documentation, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment in a school setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
• Prior experience in a school setting (school nursing, public health, pediatrics, community health).
• Colorado SSP School Nurse license (or willingness required/appropriate for the role).
• Current CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe).

Additional Information

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

• Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, and respond quickly to student needs.
• Occasionally required to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
• Close vision required for detail-oriented tasks and documentation.
• Work occurs in both office and school settings, with frequent noise and potential exposure to bacterial or viral contaminants due to interactions with youth.

Pay: From $52,000.00 per year
