School Nurse Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a school nurse in Texas?
You must hold an active registered nurse license issued or recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing, which requires completing an accredited nursing program and passing the NCLEX-RN exam. Most Texas school districts require or strongly prefer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Some larger districts also look for candidates who have completed the National Board Certification for School Nurses credential, though it is not universally required across Texas campuses.
How much do school nurses make in Texas?
School nurses in Texas earn a median of about $95,970 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $67,120 for the lowest 10% to over $127,950 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire school nurses in Texas?
Employers hiring school nurses in Texas right now include Houston Methodist, Baylor Scott & White Health, and Acadian Ambulance Service, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large urban and suburban independent school districts are the dominant employers, alongside charter management organizations and private school networks with dedicated health services programs.
Which Texas cities have the most school nurse jobs?
Houston, San Antonio, and Selma have the most school nurse openings in Texas, driven by the concentration of large independent school districts, rapidly growing suburban enrollment, and the headquarters of major charter networks that place nurses across campuses in and around those metropolitan areas.
Are there remote school nurse jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. School nursing is a hands-on, campus-based role, so fully remote positions make up a small share of the market. About 0% of school nurse openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to involve telehealth triage, health services administration, or district-level nursing coordination rather than direct student care.
How can I get hired as a school nurse in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to large Texas independent school districts that hire newly licensed RNs and provide structured onboarding, including Houston ISD and Dallas ISD, which periodically run new-nurse orientation programs for campus health roles. Candidates coming from pediatric clinics, community health, or school health aide positions have a natural advantage. Earning your NCLEX-RN and applying for the National Board Certification for School Nurses while gaining experience signals commitment and strengthens your candidacy in competitive Texas districts.
Where can I find and apply to school nurse jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to school nurse jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from Texas school districts, charter networks, and private campuses. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level and preferred location, then apply directly to the positions that fit.
