Security Manager Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a security manager in Virginia?
Most security managers in Virginia move into the role after building several years of experience in security operations, law enforcement, or the military. Virginia does not require a state-issued license specifically for corporate or program security managers, though armed security officers must hold a Virginia DCJS registration through the Department of Criminal Justice Services. Employers in the defense corridor strongly prefer candidates with an ASIS CPP credential and an active federal security clearance.
How much do security managers make in Virginia?
Security managers in Virginia earn a median of about $116,540 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $76,920 for the lowest 10% to over $191,310 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire security managers in Virginia?
Employers hiring security managers in Virginia right now include Amazon, Amazon Web Services, and Capital One, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's high concentration of defense contractors, federal agencies, and data center operators in Northern Virginia makes it one of the most active states for security management hiring in the country.
Which Virginia cities have the most security manager jobs?
Arlington, Reston, and McLean are the Virginia cities with the most security manager openings. Northern Virginia dominates because of its dense cluster of defense contractors, intelligence community offices, and technology firms, while Richmond draws openings from state government agencies, financial institutions, and healthcare systems, and Virginia Beach reflects consistent demand from military installations and regional corporate operations.
Are there remote security manager jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're rare. Security management is largely a site-based role requiring physical oversight of people, facilities, and access control systems. About 38% of security manager openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those tend to be senior policy, compliance, or program management positions rather than operational roles.
How can I get hired as a security manager in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into security management from a security officer, supervisor, or law enforcement background, then pursuing the ASIS PSP certification to signal readiness for management. Large Virginia employers like Leidos and Booz Allen Hamilton regularly hire associate or junior security program coordinators as stepping-stone roles. Obtaining a DoD security clearance early, even at the Secret level, significantly expands eligibility for Northern Virginia positions that step into management tracks.
Where can I find and apply to security manager jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to security manager jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across Northern Virginia, Richmond, Virginia Beach, and other markets. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to each one.
