Position Summary
The Health & Safety Manager plays a key leadership role in developing, implementing, and maintaining a proactive Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) culture across Alamance Foods’ warehouse and transportation operations. This position ensures compliance with OSHA, DOT/FMCSA, and company safety standards while driving initiatives that protect people, equipment, and the environment. The Associate Manager will develop and manage health and safety programs, oversee DOT compliance, conduct training, and partner with the Director of Safety and Operations leadership to enhance workplace safety and compliance across all shifts and departments.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Health & Safety Program Development
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve EHS programs, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and local regulations.
- Conduct risk assessments, job safety analyses, and routine facility inspections to identify hazards and ensure corrective actions are completed.
- Lead safety committees, incident investigations, and root-cause analyses to prevent recurrence.
- Coordinate and conduct employee safety training (PPE, hazard communication, lockout/tagout, ergonomics, etc.).
- Support health and wellness initiatives, including occupational health and employee engagement in safety awareness campaigns.
- Partner with leadership to promote a proactive, accountable safety culture across all shifts.
DOT & Fleet Safety Compliance
- Maintain and monitor DOT compliance for company drivers and vehicles.
- Ensure driver qualification files, medical cards, vehicle inspections, and Hours of Service (HOS) logs meet FMCSA requirements.
- Conduct periodic internal audits to verify compliance and readiness for DOT or insurance reviews.
- Lead post-incident reviews involving fleet or driver activity and ensure corrective measures are implemented.
- Partner with fleet maintenance to ensure all vehicles meet regulatory and company safety standards.
Leadership & Communication
- Serve as a safety liaison between departments, drivers, and management.
- Coach supervisors and employees on safety best practices and behavioral safety principles.
- Provide training and guidance to all levels of staff to enhance understanding of safety policies and compliance expectations.
- Collaborate with Human Resources on injury case management, incident reporting, and return-to-work programs.
- Communicate effectively across departments to ensure alignment on safety priorities and continuous improvement goals.
Qualifications
Education/Experience
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in health & safety, EHS compliance, or transportation safety required.
- Prior experience in manufacturing or logistics environments strongly preferred.
Knowledge/Skills
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, FMCSA, and DOT regulations.
- Proven experience developing and maintaining EHS programs.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and analytical problem-solving skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety management systems.
- CDL (Class A or B) and current DOT medical card preferred but not required.
Travel Requirements
- Full-time, on-site in charge of multiple locations on 2nd shift with travel to local facilities or distribution centers.
- Must be available for occasional after-hours support during incidents or emergencies.
Physical Requirements
- Standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods.
- Ability to climb, bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.
- Must have clear vision (near, distance, color, depth perception, and peripheral).
- Ability to work in both hot and cold manufacturing or warehouse environments.
