Security Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a security manager in California?
Becoming a security manager in California typically requires a combination of education and a valid license issued by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). Most employers expect at least a bachelor's degree alongside several years of hands-on security experience. Earning an industry credential such as the Certified Protection Professional designation strengthens candidacy significantly. Candidates with supervisory or law enforcement backgrounds who hold an active BSIS registration are consistently preferred in California listings.
How much do security managers make in California?
Security managers in California earn a median of about $118,620 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $70,690 for the lowest 10% to over $203,400 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire security managers in California?
Employers hiring security managers in California right now include Apple, Obsidian Security, and Aikido Security, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's density of major tech campuses, healthcare networks, and defense contractors means openings are spread across both corporate and government-adjacent environments throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most security manager jobs?
San Francisco, San Jose, and Los Angeles have the most security manager openings in California. Los Angeles leads because of its concentration of entertainment studios, corporate headquarters, and healthcare systems, while San Francisco and San Diego reflect demand from major tech employers and a significant defense and military-adjacent contractor presence in the southern part of the state.
Are there remote security manager jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Security manager roles are predominantly on-site by nature, requiring physical oversight of facilities, personnel, and access control systems. About 24% of security manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to focus on program governance, policy development, or enterprise risk functions that do not require a daily physical presence.
How can I get hired as a security manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a security officer or shift supervisor role at a large California employer such as a hospital system, university, or major tech campus, where internal promotion into management is common. Obtaining your California BSIS registration early signals seriousness to hiring managers. Organizations like Kaiser Permanente and UC system campuses regularly bring in candidates through structured progression tracks. Lateral moves from law enforcement, military service, or facilities management are also recognized paths into security management in California.
