Security Manager Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a security manager in New York?
Most security managers in New York begin by obtaining a Security Guard registration through the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, then advance to a supervisory license after meeting the experience requirements set by DCJS. Employers typically expect a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, business, or a related field alongside several years of frontline security experience. Earning a Certified Protection Professional credential from ASIS International is a recognized way to stand out for managerial roles.
How much do security managers make in New York?
Security managers in New York earn a median of about $131,350 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,160 for the lowest 10% to over $215,730 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire security managers in New York?
Employers hiring security managers in New York right now include TD Securities, HUMAN Security, and eClerx, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of financial institutions, hospital systems, and large commercial real estate portfolios means demand for experienced security managers is spread across a broad range of industries and employer sizes.
Which New York cities have the most security manager jobs?
New York, Albany, and New York City account for the most security manager openings in New York. New York City drives the largest share of demand because of its density of corporate headquarters, major medical centers, and high-profile venues, while Albany draws openings tied to state government facilities and Buffalo's growth in manufacturing and healthcare has expanded hiring in the western part of the state.
Are there remote security manager jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Security management is fundamentally an on-site, operations-driven role, so most positions require a physical presence. About 40% of security manager openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to involve enterprise-level policy development, vendor oversight, or program management functions that don't require daily floor presence.
How can I get hired as a security manager in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a licensed security guard in New York, building toward a supervisory license through DCJS, and moving into shift supervisor or assistant security manager roles with employers like large hospital networks, hotel groups, or commercial property management firms. Adjacent roles in facilities coordination or emergency management can also open doors. Obtaining your DCJS supervisory license early and completing an ASIS associate certification signals seriousness to New York hiring managers.
