We're a small and growing company, so you can expect to hop in on the ground floor with us and be a consequential member of the team. You'll be more than a contract performer for us — you'll also be asked for ideas to improve our company and improve your career, and you'll contribute to our team culture. We value growth and community above almost all else, so we gather regularly for game nights, happy hours, tech talks, and plenty more. We think you'll like it here!
Remember, Bitwise is not a cult.
What We Look For
Bitwise hires talented engineers who are driven by purpose and who value a culture of technical excellence, growth, and overall wellness. We deliver new and innovative intelligence solutions to our customers at the very forefront of our country's national security missions. And we do it every single day. Our work matters, and so will you.
We ask that every new hire be able to:
- Contribute meaningful thought leadership — if not right away, over time
- Interact with our customers and earn their confidence in your abilities
- Be detailed, even if that means taking a little more time to get it right
- Contribute their ideas and ideals to improve all aspects of our company
- Allow us to invest in their education so we both grow together
- Know and live our core values every single day
About this Role
We're looking for a Senior Applied AI Engineer to join a fast-moving Tactical AI team building production-quality AI applications that accelerate mission workflows. This is not a research role — you'll be designing and shipping real software that puts large language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and intelligent automation directly in the hands of analysts and operators working with complex mission data.
You'll work directly with mission customers to understand their operational challenges, rapidly prototype solutions, and shepherd successful capabilities all the way into production. The team values practical AI, rapid iteration, and tight customer collaboration over lengthy development cycles. If you're an experienced software engineer who wants to build scalable AI systems while having a real say in technical direction, this is the role for you.
As a Senior Applied AI Engineer, you will:
- Design, develop, and maintain production AI-enabled software applications using Python and modern software engineering practices
- Architect and implement LLM-powered workflows, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, and AI agent capabilities that solve real mission problems
- Develop backend services, APIs, and data pipelines that power AI-enabled applications
- Translate natural language user requests into deterministic analytical workflows through integration with mission data sources, databases, and search platforms
- Collaborate directly with mission stakeholders to understand operational workflows and rapidly prototype customer-focused solutions
- Integrate structured and unstructured data from multiple sources into scalable AI applications
- Evaluate emerging AI frameworks, models, and software engineering techniques for mission applicability
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical architecture, engineering standards, and software design across the team
Requirements
- 12 years of relevant experience, with a B.S. in a technical discipline — or 16 years of experience in lieu of a degree
- Production software development experience using Python
- Experience designing and developing distributed or backend software systems
- Experience building AI-enabled applications using LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), AI agents, or similar technologies
- Experience developing REST APIs and integrating multiple data sources
- Experience working with SQL, Elasticsearch, or other data storage technologies
- Strong understanding of software architecture, object-oriented design, and software engineering best practices
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience collaborating directly with mission customers to understand requirements and deliver operational solutions
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP), PydanticAI, LangChain, LlamaIndex, or similar AI frameworks
- Experience deploying applications using Docker, Kubernetes, or containerized environments
- Experience with React, TypeScript, Gradio, or modern web application development
- Experience designing agentic AI workflows or multi-step reasoning systems
- Experience supporting classified mission environments
- Experience leading software engineering teams or technical projects

Senior Software Engineering Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior software engineering in Maryland?
Maryland does not require a state-issued license to work as a software engineer, so the path runs through education and experience. Most candidates hold a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field from institutions like the University of Maryland or Johns Hopkins, then build several years of progressive engineering experience. In Maryland's federal contracting market, obtaining a security clearance through an employer significantly accelerates advancement to senior roles.
How much do senior software engineerings make in Maryland?
Senior software engineerings in Maryland earn a median of about $138,680 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $87,690 for the lowest 10% to over $222,610 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior software engineerings in Maryland?
Maryland senior software engineering roles are posted by CVS Health, GEICO, and Affirm and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Maryland's concentration of federal agencies and defense contractors means many senior engineering roles are tied to government programs, making it a particularly strong market for engineers with clearance eligibility or systems integration backgrounds.
Which Maryland cities have the most senior software engineering jobs?
Bethesda, Columbia, and Annapolis account for the largest share of senior software engineering openings in Maryland. The Baltimore and Bethesda areas anchor the market because of the dense cluster of federal agencies, defense contractors, and health IT firms headquartered or contracted there, while Annapolis and Columbia attract openings from mid-size technology firms and government support organizations operating between the two major metros.
Are there remote senior software engineering jobs in Maryland?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 100% of senior software engineering openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how broadly the role can be performed without a fixed office. Roles in application development, backend engineering, and cloud architecture tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while positions requiring access to classified systems or on-site lab infrastructure are more likely to require in-person work.
How can I get hired as a senior software engineering in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an associate or junior software engineer role at one of Maryland's large federal contractors, such as Northrop Grumman, SAIC, or Leidos, which run structured new-graduate programs designed to develop engineers over time. Candidates who build a strong portfolio of personal or open-source projects, earn cloud certifications from AWS or Google, and move from adjacent roles like QA engineer or systems analyst often transition into junior engineering positions that eventually lead to senior-level opportunities.
Where can I find and apply to senior software engineering jobs in Maryland?
You can find and apply to senior software engineering jobs in Maryland on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the state. Search through the roles available, identify the ones that match your experience and preferences, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
