Duties and Responsibilities
University Health Services Manoa Support
- Responsible for providing primary care and sports medicine medical services for patients visiting the University Health Services Manoa (UHSM) medical clinic or through telehealth appointments.
- Performs medical evaluations and prescribes treatment as needed to include preventive and routine health maintenance services to patients.
- Develops and implements patient care plans, instructs and counsels patients, and records progress in alignment with personal interest, training and experience within the facilities available at UHSM.
- Provides patient care at UHSM and University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Athletics Department (UHMAD) to ensure continuous coverage. Work schedule must include hours at UHSM but may be adjusted based on operational needs.
- Provides medical supervision to the nursing staff and other allied health professionals at UHSM.
- Attends regular staff meetings and serves as a member of a review/evaluation committee or panel.
- Provides general health education related to proper diet, emotional and health maintenance.
- Participates in training initiatives where needed.
- Develops and participates in quality improvement (QI) activities that enhance the quality of patient care and promote good health on the Manoa campus.
- Participates in accreditation activities and campus wide and Division of Student Success activities.
- Provides medical consultation to the University community when needed.
- Participates via institutional and/or personal membership in various medical and professional organizations.
University of Hawaii at Manoa Athletics Department Support
- Serves as the Team Physician and Athletic Health Care Administrator for the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Athletics Department (UHMAD), providing medical services to the athletic training room and medical coverage at athletic events while collaborating with UHMAD interdisciplinary staff to support student-athlete health, well-being, safety, and success. UHMAD interdisciplinary staff includes, but is not limited to, mental health services, strength and conditioning, academics, compliance, nutrition, and sports performance personnel.
- Supervises and coordinates physicians and other medical staff as assigned, to ensure appropriate medical coverage of UHMAD’s events and practices.
- Provides medical supervision for the UHMAD athletic training staff.
- Works outside of normal working hours, including nights, weekends, holidays and overnight travel with athletic teams for away competitions and related activities as needed.
- Knows, recognizes, and complies with the laws policies, rules and regulations governing the University of Hawaii and its employees, and the rules of the NCAA and affiliated conferences as now constituted or may be amended in the future. As soon as practicable, advises the Director of Athletics or designee if there is reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees, students or others have occurred or will occur.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Possession of a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for providing primary care health services at the post-graduate level; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
- Demonstrated ability to understand problems from a broad interactive perspective and use reasoning to discern underlying principles and issues when problem solving, and apply creative thinking to resolve problems in new and innovative approaches.
- Demonstrated written and verbal competence in presenting ideas, concepts and models clearly using persuasion and negotiation to build consensus and cooperation.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software, and presentation software and electronic medical records systems.
- For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
- Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Hawai'i medical license, Hawai'i State Narcotics certificate, and Federal DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) certificate; all three must be obtained by appointment.
- Board-certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics with active maintenance of certification.
- One (1) year of experience as a Team Physician in a college or equivalent setting.
- Possess a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine with active maintenance of certification or be an active candidate for certification, with the requirement to achieve full Board Certification within two years of hire.
- Ability to obtain and maintain liability insurance consistent with UHSM medical staff standards.
- Highly motivated with proven ability in patient care in primary care medicine.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities and responsibilities.
- Effective interpersonal skills, communication skills, and management skills.
- Ability to work outside of normal working hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight travel with athletic teams for away competitions and related athletic activities as needed.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience working in a university campus setting.
- Experience working with adolescents/young adults.
- Experience in designing and undertaking medical quality improvement projects.
