Software Developer Jobs in Louisiana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software developer in Louisiana?
Louisiana does not require a state-issued license to work as a software developer. Most employers hire candidates with a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field from a Louisiana university such as LSU, Tulane, or the University of New Orleans. Building a portfolio of projects and earning industry certifications in cloud or cybersecurity strengthens a candidate's standing with Louisiana employers significantly.
How much do software developers make in Louisiana?
Software developers in Louisiana earn a median of about $102,800 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $66,350 for the lowest 10% to over $151,780 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software developers in Louisiana?
Employers hiring software developers in Louisiana right now include Speechify, CVS Health, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Louisiana's energy sector, defense contractors operating out of the Shreveport and Baton Rouge corridors, and regional financial institutions also generate consistent software developer demand throughout the year.
Which Louisiana cities have the most software developer jobs?
Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and New Orleans account for the most software developer openings in Louisiana. New Orleans drives volume through its growing technology startup scene, tourism-tech companies, and financial services firms, while Baton Rouge reflects demand from state government agencies, petrochemical companies, and LSU-affiliated research operations.
Are there remote software developer jobs in Louisiana?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 91% of software developer openings tied to Louisiana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how well the role adapts to distributed work. Backend development, cloud engineering, and software architecture positions are the most likely to be listed as fully remote by Louisiana employers.
How can I get hired as a software developer in Louisiana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an associate or junior developer role at a Louisiana-based defense contractor or state agency, where structured onboarding programs exist for new graduates. Employers such as CGI Federal and state IT offices regularly bring on candidates from LSU's computer science program or the University of New Orleans. Contributing to open-source projects, completing a coding bootcamp, and earning an entry-level cloud certification gives candidates a concrete edge when applying.
Where can I find and apply to software developer jobs in Louisiana?
