Staff Pharmacist Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a staff pharmacist in Virginia?
You become a staff pharmacist in Virginia by earning a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited program, passing the NAPLEX and MPJE licensing exams, and obtaining an active license from the Virginia Board of Pharmacy. The Board oversees licensure, renewal, and continuing education requirements for all pharmacists practicing in the state. New graduates must complete a practical experience requirement before full licensure is granted.
How much do staff pharmacists make in Virginia?
Staff pharmacists in Virginia earn a median of about $144,060 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $106,800 for the lowest 10% to over $173,550 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire staff pharmacists in Virginia?
Employers hiring staff pharmacists in Virginia right now include CVS Health, Walmart, and Ayr Wellness, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's mix of large retail chains, regional health systems, and federal facilities around Northern Virginia and the Hampton Roads area means demand comes from a wide range of employer types.
Which Virginia cities have the most staff pharmacist jobs?
Fredericksburg, Hampton, and Roanoke have the most staff pharmacist openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia's dense suburban population and proximity to major health systems and federal agencies drive high volume there, while Richmond's concentration of health system headquarters and Virginia Beach's large community pharmacy and hospital presence account for strong demand in those markets.
Are there remote staff pharmacist jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're rare. Staff pharmacist work is primarily hands-on and facility-based, so fully remote positions are uncommon by the nature of the role. About 0% of staff pharmacist openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those tend to be in telepharmacy, prior authorization review, or specialty clinical consultation rather than traditional dispensing.
How can I get hired as a staff pharmacist in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a new-graduate staff pharmacist position at a large retail chain or health system immediately after licensure. Inova Health System and VCU Health in Richmond both offer post-graduate year one pharmacy residency programs that build clinical experience for candidates with no prior staff pharmacist history. Completing a pharmacy technician role or intern position during school at a Virginia-based employer, then transitioning internally after licensure, is another well-established route into full staff pharmacist roles.
Where can I find and apply to staff pharmacist jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to staff pharmacist jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings from employers hiring right now. Find roles that fit your experience and preferred location and apply directly to the ones that match.
