Description
The incumbent will work alongside the Integrated Health multidisciplinary team to provide mental health therapy for eligible Hampton University faculty, students and members of the Hampton Roads community. Mental health care for students will be provided under the auspice of the Hampton University Student Counseling Center (SCC). Faculty and staff mental health care will be provided via telehealth. The clinician provides clinical psychosocial assessment, individual therapy, couples and family therapy (as applicable), group therapy and independently documents the workload in the confidential medical record system. The clinician will provide outreach services, resiliency trainings, group therapy/group workshop services and partnerships with the community to promote a welcoming and affirming mental health environment for clients. The incumbent will be responsible for providing outreach and educational presentations which may include posttraumatic growth, suicide prevention and awareness, and resilience. The incumbent provides these services in a very independent fashion with consultative supervision from the Director of the Student Counseling Center.
Examples of Duties
- Work alongside a multidisciplinary team, to include the Lead Mental Health Clinician to develop Integrated wellness services, which will include providing mental health care to Hampton University students, faculty/staff and members of the community.
- Provide time-limited, evidence-based psychotherapy services, care management and supportive therapy interventions.
- Administer brief mental health assessments (e.g., PHQ-9, GAD-7, etc.) and provide results to clients.
- Independently performs case finding functions and outreach, identifying and screening clients for psychosocial needs. Incumbent must possess the knowledge and ability to independently implement treatment modalities, provide counseling or psychotherapy for individuals and groups.
- Independently conducts psychosocial assessments. Develops treatment plans in collaboration with the client and with the Student Counseling Center if applicable. Incumbent possesses the skills to offer psychosocial interventions and measures outcomes to interventions.
- Independently identifies high-risk patients and provides crisis intervention services, seeking to address the cause as well as the presenting complaint, coordinates family conferences and serves as liaison to family/community members.
- Has working knowledge and experience in use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures. This includes acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries.
- Develops education materials/modules and assists with campus related wellness initiatives.
- Provides after-hours and on-call crisis intervention services, if needed.
- Able to meet the needs of students while supporting HU missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (students, HU faculty and staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Incumbent is able to provide the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures.
- The licensed clinician exercises independent clinical judgment in the practice and provision of client services and university needs (clinical care, consultation, and education). The clinician performs duties independently, reporting to the Lead Mental Health Clinician, who acts as the immediate supervisor and leave approving official.
Typical Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years experience with administering brief mental health screenings/assessments.
- This position requires one who is client-centered, accessible and open to providing mental health services in a collaborative, but independent fashion.
- Clinical experience working with diverse populations as it relates to resilience, posttraumatic growth, and the stigma of mental health.
- The successful candidate must be able to work collaboratively with Hampton University students, faculty, staff and administrators to serve as a liaison and advocate when needed.
- Must possess the ability to deal with crises as they arise.
- Experience with outreach programming, web content management (e.g., social media), creative design (e.g., creating flyers) is desired.
Supplemental Information
This is a grant-funded position. Continuation of the position is contingent upon the continuation of related grant funding. This position will end on June 30, 2026.
Other Necessary Requirements
- Completion of a PhD in Psychology or a similar degree or Completion of a Master’s Degree in Counseling from a CACREP accredited school and/or a Master’s Degree in Social Work and licensure in a state at the independent/clinical practice level. A terminal Master’s Degree in Psychology may be considered.
- Licensed in respective mental health field. Individuals pursuing licensure may be considered.
- Experience in outpatient mental health, medical settings, and/or University Counseling Centers preferred.
