Mid Level State And Local Tax Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a mid level state and local tax manager job?
Position your experience around ownership, not just execution. Highlight specific multi-state compliance projects you led, nexus analyses you conducted independently, and any work advising on state tax exposure or audit responses. Tailor your resume to show depth in SALT disciplines like income, franchise, or sales and use tax, and emphasize situations where you drove decisions with limited direction from senior staff.
Which companies hire mid level state and local tax managers?
Companies hiring mid level state and local tax managers right now include KPMG, Barracuda Networks, and Weaver, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. At this level, hiring typically comes from large regional and national employers, public accounting firms, and multistate corporations managing complex state tax footprints across multiple jurisdictions.
Are there remote mid level state and local tax manager jobs?
Yes, and a meaningful share of openings offer location flexibility. About 11% of mid level state and local tax manager openings are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the document-driven, research-heavy nature of SALT work that translates well outside a traditional office setting. On-site roles remain common at larger in-house tax departments and regional accounting firms.
How do I move up to a mid level state and local tax manager role?
The path from entry level to mid level in state and local tax runs through demonstrated ownership. Build depth in at least one core SALT area, such as sales and use tax compliance or state income tax return preparation, then seek out projects that require independent judgment. Consistently delivering accurate, well-documented work product and proactively identifying state tax issues signals readiness for mid level responsibility.
Which industries hire the most mid level state and local tax managers?
Mid Level state and local tax manager roles concentrate in Accounting & Auditing, Electronics & Hardware, and Consulting & Professional Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. These sectors tend to operate across multiple states, generating the complex nexus, apportionment, and compliance obligations that require dedicated mid level SALT expertise rather than generalist tax staff.
