Tax Associate Jobs in North Carolina: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax associate in North Carolina?
Most tax associate roles in North Carolina require a bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field, and employers strongly prefer candidates who are actively pursuing CPA licensure through the NC State Board of CPA Examiners. The NC CPA path requires passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Exam and meeting the Board's education and experience requirements. Firms in Charlotte and Raleigh routinely hire recent graduates who are exam-eligible and working toward licensure.
How much do tax associates make in North Carolina?
Tax associates in North Carolina earn a median of about $48,130 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $35,480 for the lowest 10% to over $97,720 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax associates in North Carolina?
Employers hiring tax associates in North Carolina right now include H&R Block, TJT, and Timberland, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. North Carolina's concentration of large financial institutions in Charlotte and the growing technology sector in the Research Triangle area means both Big Four firms and large corporate tax departments maintain steady hiring pipelines in the state.
Which North Carolina cities have the most tax associate jobs?
Charlotte, Greensboro, and Chapel Hill have the most tax associate openings in North Carolina. Charlotte leads because it is home to major bank headquarters and regional offices of national accounting firms, while Raleigh's Research Triangle concentration of technology companies and universities drives strong corporate and public accounting demand, and Greensboro anchors hiring for mid-market manufacturing and logistics companies in the Piedmont Triad.
Are there remote tax associate jobs in North Carolina?
Yes, and more than many comparable accounting roles, since tax compliance and research work translates well to remote environments. About 100% of tax associate openings tied to North Carolina are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting a genuine shift among public accounting firms and corporate tax departments since firms updated their work policies. Tax research, return preparation, and advisory work tend to be the functions most readily offered on a remote or hybrid basis.
How can I get hired as a tax associate in North Carolina with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to the structured intern-to-hire or new-associate programs that Big Four and large regional firms such as Dixon Hughes Goodman run out of their Charlotte and Raleigh offices, which are designed specifically for candidates without prior professional tax experience. A lateral move from a bookkeeping, payroll, or staff accounting role at a North Carolina company is also a common door-opener. Completing the education requirements to sit for the NC CPA Exam before applying gives candidates a measurable edge over those who have not yet started the process.
Where can I find and apply to tax associate jobs in North Carolina?
You can find and apply to tax associate jobs in North Carolina on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, and other North Carolina locations. Find roles that fit your experience and background, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
