Tax Director Jobs in Wisconsin: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax director in Wisconsin?
Most Wisconsin tax directors hold an active CPA license issued through the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services, which requires passing the Uniform CPA Examination and meeting Wisconsin's education and experience requirements. A bachelor's degree in accounting or finance is the standard starting point, typically followed by several years in public accounting or a corporate tax department. Advanced credentials like a Master of Taxation or an LLM in Taxation strengthen candidacy for director-level roles.
How much do tax directors make in Wisconsin?
Tax directors in Wisconsin earn a median of about $79,400 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $58,340 for the lowest 10% to over $127,800 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax directors in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin tax director roles are posted by BDO, Berndt CPA, and Sorren and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Wisconsin's concentration of insurance carriers, consumer goods manufacturers, and regional hospital systems means demand stays fairly broad rather than tied to a single industry.
Which Wisconsin cities have the most tax director jobs?
Madison, Milwaukee, and Waukesha have the most tax director openings in Wisconsin. Milwaukee leads because it is home to the state's largest cluster of corporate headquarters and financial services firms, while Madison draws demand from insurance, technology, and state government adjacent employers, and Green Bay reflects the region's manufacturing and food-industry base.
Are there remote tax director jobs in Wisconsin?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 100% of tax director openings tied to Wisconsin are remote or hybrid as of November 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves compliance analysis, financial reporting, and software-based review rather than on-site presence. Federal and state income tax compliance and ASC 740 review tend to be the most remote-friendly parts of the role.
How can I get hired as a tax director in Wisconsin with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a staff or senior tax accountant role at a Wisconsin public accounting firm or a large corporate tax department, which builds the multi-state compliance and ASC 740 exposure directors are expected to have. Large Wisconsin employers like Kohl's and American Family Insurance recruit through associate and rotational finance programs that move high performers toward tax leadership. Earning your CPA through the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services early signals long-term commitment and gives a measurable edge over candidates who delay licensure.
