Tax Manager Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax manager in Maryland?
Most employers require a CPA license issued or recognized by the Maryland Board of Public Accountancy, which means passing the Uniform CPA Examination and meeting Maryland's education and experience requirements. Candidates typically hold a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, often supplemented by a master's in taxation. From there, progression through senior associate and supervisor roles in public accounting or corporate tax departments in Maryland is the standard path to a manager title.
How much do tax managers make in Maryland?
Tax managers in Maryland earn a median of about $89,370 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $59,760 for the lowest 10% to over $156,660 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax managers in Maryland?
Companies currently hiring tax managers in Maryland include Jobot, Weaver, and CBIZ, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Maryland's concentration of government contractors, regional financial institutions, and large healthcare systems means demand for tax managers with federal compliance and nonprofit tax experience is particularly active.
Which Maryland cities have the most tax manager jobs?
Bethesda, Baltimore, and Rockville account for the most tax manager openings in Maryland. Baltimore leads because of its dense cluster of financial services firms, hospital systems, and regional headquarters, while the Montgomery County and Bethesda corridor draws heavily from federal government contractors and multinational companies with Washington D.C. area operations, making even suburban Maryland a strong market for tax management roles.
Are there remote tax manager jobs in Maryland?
Yes, and more than most fields, since tax work is largely analytical and document-driven rather than on-site. About 63% of tax manager openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how well the role translates to distributed teams. Tax provision, research, and compliance review are the functions most consistently offered on a remote or hybrid basis.
How can I get hired as a tax manager in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a tax staff or senior associate role at a Maryland public accounting firm, where CPA firms in Baltimore and Bethesda regularly recruit new graduates into structured development programs that progress to manager over several years. Adjacent roles such as tax analyst or accounting analyst at Maryland's government contractors or healthcare systems also serve as stepping stones. Earning your CPA through the Maryland Board of Public Accountancy while working in one of these roles is the credential that accelerates the move into management.
Where can I find and apply to tax manager jobs in Maryland?
