Tax Professional Jobs in Minnesota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax professional in Minnesota?
Most tax professional roles in Minnesota require at minimum a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, and competitive positions expect CPA licensure through the Minnesota Board of Accountancy, which oversees the CPA exam, education requirements, and continuing education. Some employer-specific roles, particularly in tax preparation, accept an IRS Enrolled Agent credential or completion of registered preparer training in lieu of a CPA for certain filing-focused positions.
How much do tax professionals make in Minnesota?
Tax professionals in Minnesota earn a median of about $59,200 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $36,520 for the lowest 10% to over $95,520 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax professionals in Minnesota?
Employers hiring tax professionals in Minnesota right now include H&R Block and TMS Financial, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Minnesota's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters and large regional accounting firms means demand runs across both in-house corporate tax teams and public accounting practices throughout the Twin Cities and beyond.
Which Minnesota cities have the most tax professional jobs?
Duluth, Mora, and Anoka account for the largest share of tax professional openings in Minnesota. The Twin Cities metro drives the bulk of demand because it hosts a dense cluster of corporate headquarters, regional accounting firms, and financial services companies, while smaller markets like Rochester benefit from anchor employers such as Mayo Clinic and the institutions that support its large professional workforce.
Are there remote tax professional jobs in Minnesota?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 100% of tax professional openings tied to Minnesota are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how document-driven and software-dependent the work is. Roles focused on individual and business tax return preparation, tax research, and compliance review tend to be the most amenable to fully remote arrangements, while positions requiring client advisory relationships or audit support are more likely to require some in-office presence.
How can I get hired as a tax professional in Minnesota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a tax associate or staff accountant role at a regional or national public accounting firm with Minnesota offices, where structured training programs onboard candidates with a relevant degree and no prior professional experience. Large Minnesota-based employers and the Big Four firms recruiting through University of Minnesota and other state universities regularly run intern-to-hire pipelines. Completing the CPA exam sections early, earning an IRS Enrolled Agent credential, or gaining experience through VITA volunteer tax preparation sites in the Twin Cities gives candidates a concrete edge over other entry-level applicants.
Where can I find and apply to tax professional jobs in Minnesota?
You can find and apply to tax professional jobs in Minnesota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level and specialty, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
