Verify your credentials meet Accountant classification
TN visa sponsorship for Assistant Controller roles requires classification under the Accountant category. Your degree must be in accounting or a directly related field. A finance or business degree without accounting coursework can draw a CBP challenge at entry.
Target employers experienced with visa sponsorship
Multinational corporations, public companies, and large regional CPA-audited firms have experience sponsoring work visas and understand visa-eligible roles like Accountant. Their HR and legal teams are familiar with visa sponsorship processes, which streamlines hiring since internal approval chains already know what's needed for work visa candidates.
Build your support letter around accounting duties
Your employer's support letter must map your Assistant Controller duties, such as month-end close, financial statement preparation, and internal audit oversight, directly to the USMCA Accountant classification. Generic job description language that mirrors a broad finance manager role weakens your case.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsorship-ready employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers actively listing Assistant Controller roles with TN visa sponsorship. Filtering by sponsorship readiness saves you from approaching companies whose HR teams have no process in place for USMCA-based work authorization.
Prepare for CBP scrutiny on supervisory scope
Assistant Controller roles that include significant people management can prompt CBP questions about whether the position truly requires accounting expertise or functions primarily as a general manager. Bring documentation showing your technical accounting responsibilities as the core of the role.
Align your offer letter timeline before filing
TN status is tied to the offer letter's stated start date. If your employer's onboarding timeline shifts after you receive CBP approval, you'll need a new support letter reflecting the updated start date before you can begin work legally.
Assistant Controller TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Assistant Controller role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, Assistant Controller positions qualify under the USMCA's Accountant professional category, provided the role centers on accounting functions such as financial reporting, internal controls, general ledger oversight, or audit coordination. Roles where the primary duties shift toward general business management rather than technical accounting can face classification challenges at the border or consulate.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Assistant Controller roles?
For Canadian citizens, the TN visa is significantly more straightforward. There is no lottery, no annual cap, and no multi-month waiting period. You can apply at a port of entry the same day your employer issues a support letter. H-1B visa requires lottery selection, an April registration window, and an October 1 start date at the earliest, making TN far more practical for accounting professionals with a qualifying degree and job offer.
What documents does the employer need to provide for a TN filing?
Your employer must provide a support letter on company letterhead that identifies the position as falling under the USMCA Accountant category, describes your specific accounting duties, states the offered compensation, and confirms the employment period. Supporting documents such as your degree transcripts and professional credentials travel with you as the applicant, not the employer.
Can I find Assistant Controller jobs with TN sponsorship on Migrate Mate?
Yes. Migrate Mate is built specifically to help Canadian and Mexican professionals find U.S. roles where employers are prepared to support TN visa sponsorship. Filtering for Assistant Controller positions on Migrate Mate surfaces listings from employers whose hiring teams are already familiar with the USMCA Accountant category and the documentation required to bring you on.
Can a Mexican citizen get TN sponsorship for an Assistant Controller job?
Yes, but the process differs from the Canadian pathway. Mexican TN applicants must schedule a visa interview at a U.S. consulate in Mexico rather than applying at a port of entry. The USMCA imposes an annual cap of 5,500 TN visas for Mexican nationals, so timing your application and securing a consulate appointment early in the fiscal year matters for planning your start date.
