Align your credentials to management consulting
TN visa classification for Business Development Assistants depends on fitting the Management Consultant category. Your degree or professional credentials must support that framing. A business, economics, or marketing degree strengthens your case considerably.
Request a support letter covering your duties
Ask your employer to draft a TN support letter that describes your specific duties in consulting terms: market analysis, proposal development, client strategy support. Vague job descriptions are the most common reason officers request more documentation.
Target employers with active cross-border hiring
Prioritize companies that have previously hired Canadian or Mexican professionals. Employers familiar with TN requirements process your paperwork faster and are less likely to stall over sponsorship unfamiliarity when you bring up the process.
Search TN-eligible roles at visa-sponsoring employers
Filter your search by TN visa eligibility on Migrate Mate to find Business Development Assistant openings at employers with recent visa filings, indicating they're experienced with work visa sponsorship. This cuts out the back-and-forth of educating recruiters about TN eligibility from scratch.
Prepare for port-of-entry review if you are Canadian
Canadian citizens apply for TN status directly at a U.S. land border or pre-clearance airport, not a consulate. Bring your job offer letter, credentials, and the employer support letter. CBP officers adjudicate TN petitions on the spot.
Business Development Assistant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Business Development Assistant role qualify for TN visa status?
It depends on how the role is structured. Business Development Assistant positions qualify under the TN Management Consultant category when the duties center on market analysis, strategic planning support, or client acquisition consulting. Roles that are primarily administrative or sales-execution focused, without a consulting component, are less likely to qualify. Your employer's support letter framing matters as much as your actual job duties.
How does the TN visa compare to the H-1B for Business Development Assistant jobs?
The TN visa has no annual lottery and no numerical cap for Canadian citizens, so you can start work as soon as CBP approves your status at the port of entry. The H-1B visa requires USCIS registration, a lottery selection, and a six-month wait before the October 1 start date. For Canadian professionals who qualify under the Management Consultant category, the TN is substantially faster and more predictable than pursuing H-1B sponsorship.
Where can I find Business Development Assistant jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Business Development Assistant roles where employers are prepared to support TN visa sponsorship. Searching on general job boards means filtering out the majority of postings from employers unfamiliar with the TN process. Migrate Mate surfaces roles where the sponsorship pathway is already confirmed, saving you the time of educating recruiters from scratch.
What documents does a Mexican citizen need for a TN visa as a Business Development Assistant?
Mexican citizens apply at a U.S. consulate rather than a port of entry. You will need a valid passport, a completed DS-160 application, your employer's TN support letter describing your consulting duties, proof of your academic credentials, and the consular fee. Unlike Canadian citizens, Mexican nationals receive a visa stamp and are subject to a separate appointment and processing timeline at the consulate.
Can my TN status be renewed if I stay in the same Business Development Assistant role?
Yes. TN status is granted in up to three-year increments and can be renewed indefinitely as long as you maintain a qualifying job offer and the role continues to meet the Management Consultant category criteria. Each renewal requires a new employer support letter confirming your duties and credentials. There is no lifetime cap on the number of renewals for either Canadian or Mexican TN holders.
