Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Cardiac Surgeon
Gather credentials before contacting employers
Compile your medical degree, residency and fellowship completion certificates, and board certification documentation before outreach. TN officers at the border verify that your training directly supports the cardiac surgery role, gaps in documentation cause denials on the spot.
Target health systems with active sponsorship history
Academic medical centers and large hospital networks with dedicated international physician recruitment teams are experienced navigating work visa sponsorship. Smaller private practices often lack the administrative infrastructure to prepare the employer support letter required for TN visa applications for surgeon hires.
Verify your employer letter covers surgical scope
The employer support letter must describe your specific duties as a cardiac surgeon, your degree requirements, and the temporary nature of the role. Generic physician letters that omit surgical specialization have triggered TN refusals at ports of entry.
Use Migrate Mate to filter roles by TN eligibility
Search Migrate Mate to identify cardiac surgery openings at employers with recent visa filings and experience sponsoring work visas. Filtering by visa type saves time and focuses your applications on positions where sponsorship infrastructure already exists.
Understand Mexican applicants face annual allocation limits
Unlike Canadian citizens who enter TN status directly at the border, Mexican nationals must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate and are subject to a capped annual allocation. Apply early in the fiscal year to avoid waitlist delays.
Confirm state medical licensure timing with your hiring team
Most U.S. hospital credentialing committees require an active state medical license before your start date. Some states take four to six months to process international medical graduate applications, so initiate licensure in parallel with your TN sponsorship process.

Find Cardiac Surgeon JobsCardiac Surgeon TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does cardiac surgery qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Cardiac surgeons qualify under the USMCA's physician and surgeon occupational category, which covers specialized surgical practice. Your employer must provide a support letter confirming the role requires your surgical specialization, and you must hold a medical degree plus completed residency and fellowship training recognized by the relevant Canadian or Mexican licensing authority.
How does TN compare to H-1B for cardiac surgeon roles?
TN is faster and more predictable for Canadian citizens. There is no lottery, no annual cap, and no lengthy USCIS petition process, Canadians enter TN status directly at the border on the day of travel. H-1B requires a lottery selection that runs once per year and takes months to adjudicate. For Mexican cardiac surgeons, TN involves consular processing but still avoids the H-1B lottery.
What documents does a cardiac surgeon need to enter TN status?
You need a valid passport, an employer support letter describing your cardiac surgery duties and confirming the role is temporary, proof of your medical degree, residency and fellowship completion certificates, and your board certification. Canadian citizens present these directly to a CBP officer at the port of entry. Mexican citizens submit them as part of a consular visa application.
Where can I find cardiac surgeon jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists cardiac surgery positions at employers with recent visa filings, so you can target openings where the hiring team already understands work visa sponsorship. Searching by role and visa type narrows results to employers whose HR and legal teams are experienced with the visa support process, including preparing the employer letter that's central to TN applications for specialized surgical roles.
Can I switch to a different hospital while on TN status as a cardiac surgeon?
Yes, but TN status is tied to a specific employer. When you change hospitals, your new employer must issue a fresh support letter and you need to obtain a new TN authorization before your start date with them. Canadian surgeons can do this at the border; Mexican surgeons typically need to return to a consulate for a new TN visa stamp.
