Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Consultant
Frame your credentials around USMCA categories
Your degree field must align with a USMCA-listed occupation, not just the job title 'Consultant.' Map your specific discipline, such as engineering, economics, or management science, to the corresponding TN category before applying.
Target firms with active cross-border hiring
Professional services firms that staff Canadian or Mexican offices regularly have internal processes for TN sponsorship. Prioritize employers whose projects involve U.S.-Canada or U.S.-Mexico client work, where TN hiring is already normalized.
Search TN-eligible roles at employers with visa experience
Sorting through employers who are genuinely open to visa sponsorship is the hardest part. Migrate Mate filters Consultant roles by employers with recent visa filing experience, so you spend time on real opportunities rather than guessing from job descriptions.
Draft an offer letter that satisfies CBP scrutiny
Canadian citizens present their TN application directly to CBP at the port of entry. Your offer letter must state your professional title, specific consulting activities, degree requirement for the role, and the engagement duration to avoid on-the-spot denials.
Clarify your project-based work structure early
Consulting roles often involve multiple clients or rotating engagements. Confirm with your employer whether the TN petition will cover the primary employer relationship or each end client, since CBP expects clarity on who directs your day-to-day work.
Prepare for Mexican nationals' consulate timeline
Mexican citizens apply at a U.S. consulate rather than a land port of entry, which adds scheduling time. Build at least four to six weeks into your start date timeline and confirm your DS-160 reflects the correct TN professional category.

Find Consultant JobsConsultant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Consultant role actually qualify for TN visa status?
It depends on your underlying discipline. The TN category does not list 'Consultant' as a standalone occupation. Your role qualifies only if it maps to a recognized USMCA professional category, such as Management Consultant, Engineer, Economist, or Scientist, and your degree directly supports that designation. The job duties in your offer letter must reflect the USMCA-listed occupation, not just a generic consulting title.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Consultant roles?
TN visa sponsorship for Consultants avoids the H-1B lottery entirely and has no annual cap for Canadian citizens. Canadians can get TN status approved at the port of entry the same day. H-1B requires an April lottery registration and a months-long USCIS petition process. The tradeoff is that TN status is tied to the employer and specific role description, so scope changes may require an updated petition.
Can I work for multiple consulting clients on a single TN visa?
Your TN petition is tied to the employer named in your offer letter, not to individual end clients. If your firm places you across multiple clients, your employer remains the petitioner and CBP reviews the employer relationship, not each client engagement. However, if you are paid directly by different clients as an independent contractor, each arrangement may require its own TN filing.
Where can I find Consultant jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most job postings do not specify TN sponsorship separately from general work authorization. Migrate Mate surfaces Consultant roles from employers with recent visa filings, which removes the guesswork of cold-applying and then discovering late in the process that the employer is unfamiliar with work visa sponsorship or USMCA categories entirely.
What happens if my consulting engagement ends before my TN status expires?
TN status is tied to the specific employment described in your petition. If your engagement ends, you are no longer maintaining valid TN status even if the authorized period has not expired. You should notify your employer and either secure a new TN-qualifying role quickly or depart the United States. There is no formal grace period equivalent to the 60-day H-1B grace period for TN holders.
