Align your credentials to TN categories
Director of Security roles don't have a dedicated TN visa category, so your application depends on how your employer classifies the position. A security management or criminal justice degree paired with a clearly scoped job letter is what gets this through.
Request a specialty occupation letter early
Ask your prospective employer to document that the Director of Security role requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Vague job descriptions referencing general management experience without degree requirements are the most common reason TN applications stall at the border.
Target employers with existing TN hiring history
Focus your search on enterprise-level organizations in sectors such as financial services, healthcare systems, and critical infrastructure, where security leadership roles are consistently filled at the degree-required professional level rather than through general operational experience.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify companies actively hiring Director of Security professionals under TN sponsorship. The platform filters roles by visa type so you're not cold-applying to employers unfamiliar with TN classification requirements for security leadership positions.
Prepare for Mexican consular processing timelines
As a Mexican citizen, you'll apply at a U.S. consulate rather than at the border. Have your employer prepare a support letter before scheduling your appointment, and build at least three to four weeks into your start date timeline to account for consular processing.
Confirm your employer understands TN vs. USCIS filing
Canadian citizens don't require USCIS approval and can present TN documentation at a port of entry. Make sure your HR contact knows this distinction, since employers accustomed to H-1B visa processes sometimes mistakenly initiate an I-129 petition filing that isn't required for Canadians.
Director Of Security TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Director of Security role qualify for a TN visa?
The TN visa doesn't list Director of Security as a standalone category, so qualification depends on how the role is framed. If the position requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, security management, or a related discipline, it can qualify under categories such as Management Consultant or Scientific Technician depending on the employer's job definition and supporting documentation.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Director of Security positions?
The TN visa has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and can be granted at a port of entry the same day for Canadians. H-1B requires a lottery with roughly a one-in-four selection rate and takes months to process. For Director of Security roles where the specialty occupation argument is well-documented, TN is a faster and more predictable path than competing in the H-1B lottery.
Where can I find Director of Security jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It surfaces Director of Security roles at employers who support TN visa sponsorship, so you're not sifting through postings from companies unfamiliar with the classification. Filtering by TN at the start of your search saves time and connects you with hiring managers who already understand the process.
What documents does a Canadian citizen need to present at the border for TN status in a Director of Security role?
You'll need a valid Canadian passport, a detailed support letter from your U.S. employer describing the role's duties, required degree, and TN category classification, your academic credentials confirming the qualifying degree, and the CBP Form I-94 fee. The employer letter is the most scrutinized document, so specificity about how the role meets TN professional criteria matters considerably.
Can a Mexican citizen in a Director of Security role renew TN status, and how often?
Yes. TN status is granted in three-year increments with no cap on renewals, meaning Mexican citizens can remain in TN status indefinitely as long as they maintain a qualifying job offer and the role continues to meet TN professional requirements. Renewals go through U.S. consular processing in Mexico, so building renewal timelines into your employment planning is practical.
