Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Family Physician
Verify your license meets state requirements
Each state where you'll practice requires its own medical license, and TN status is tied to your job location. Confirm your Canadian or Mexican credentials are recognized in the specific U.S. state before accepting an offer.
Target health systems with established TN pipelines
Large hospital networks and federally qualified health centers regularly sponsor TN physicians. Prioritize employers with recent visa sponsorship experience, as their HR teams will be familiar with the documentation and support letter requirements for work visa candidates.
Secure your support letter before negotiating start dates
Your employer prepares a support letter outlining your role and qualifications before your TN application is submitted. For Canadian applicants, build at least two weeks into your start date to allow time for document preparation and your port of entry presentation. For Mexican applicants, account for U.S. consulate processing time. This ensures nothing stalls on your credentialing day.
Search TN-sponsoring physician employers on Migrate Mate
Filtering for Family Physician roles at employers with recent visa filings helps you focus on companies experienced with work visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces employers by role and visa type so you spend time on genuine opportunities, not dead ends.
Gather proof of specialty occupation at the port of entry
Canadian physicians applying for TN status directly at a U.S. port of entry need the job offer letter, employer support letter, medical degree, and state license documentation in hand. CBP officers adjudicate on the spot, so gaps in documentation mean denial.
Request TN renewal timing from your employer early
TN status is granted in three-year increments with unlimited renewals. Coordinate with your employer to start the renewal process at least 90 days before expiration to avoid any gap in your authorization to practice.

Find Family Physician JobsFamily Physician TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Family Physician role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Physicians are explicitly listed among the qualifying USMCA professional occupations for TN status. You need an MD or DO degree and a valid license in the state where you'll practice. The role must be a direct employment arrangement, not an independent contractor position, for TN eligibility to apply.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Family Physician jobs?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, making it far more predictable for physician hiring than H-1B. H-1B requires employer sponsorship through a lottery that accepts only a fraction of registrations each year. TN also processes faster, since Canadian physicians can receive TN status at a U.S. port of entry the same day. Mexican physicians follow a consular route, but still avoid the H-1B lottery.
Can I switch employers on a TN visa as a Family Physician?
You can change employers, but TN status is employer-specific. Your new employer must provide a support letter and a qualifying job offer before you start work. Canadian physicians can apply for the new TN at a port of entry with the employer's support letter, while Mexican physicians typically need a new consular appointment to have the updated visa stamp issued.
Where can I find Family Physician jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you filter Family Physician openings by visa type, so you can focus on employers experienced with visa sponsorship. Generic job searches rarely surface sponsorship details upfront, which means most of your outreach would go to employers unfamiliar with the TN process or unprepared to support your application.
Does my Canadian or Mexican medical degree satisfy TN specialty occupation requirements?
Generally yes, but the degree must be equivalent to a U.S. MD or DO. Canadian degrees from accredited medical schools are routinely accepted. Mexican physicians often need a credential evaluation confirming equivalency, and some states require additional licensing steps before issuing a state medical license, which is a prerequisite for TN approval.
