Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Field Sales Engineer
Align your credentials to the Engineer category
TN visa status for Field Sales Engineers requires a degree in engineering or a closely related field. A business degree alone won't qualify. Get a credential evaluation if your Canadian or Mexican degree title differs from standard U.S. engineering designations before you apply.
Target companies with active technical sales teams
Search employers in industrial automation, semiconductor, and test-and-measurement sectors. These industries regularly hire Field Sales Engineers and have HR teams familiar with TN filings, shortening the time between offer and your first day.
Negotiate the support letter before accepting an offer
Your employer's TN support letter must describe your role in engineering terms, not sales. Ask to review the draft before you sign your offer. A letter that emphasizes territory management over technical application reviews will create problems at the border.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-ready employers
Find Field Sales Engineer roles with employers that already understand TN visa sponsorship using Migrate Mate. Filtering for TN-familiar companies cuts the time you spend educating hiring managers about the process and avoids offers that stall at legal review.
Canadians can self-file at the border with your offer letter
As a Canadian citizen, you don't wait for USCIS approval. Bring your degree documents, the employer's support letter, and your job offer to a land port of entry or preclearance airport. CBP adjudicates TN status on the spot, often within the same day.
Mexican applicants should file DS-160 well before your start date
Mexican citizens must schedule a consular interview through a U.S. embassy or consulate. Appointment wait times vary by city and season, so file your DS-160 and book your slot as soon as your employer finalizes the support letter, not after your start date is set.
Field Sales Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Field Sales Engineer role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, if your employer structures the role under the Engineer occupational category and your degree is in engineering or a closely related technical field. The job duties must emphasize technical application and engineering judgment, not purely account management or business development. A support letter that describes the role in those terms is what CBP or the consulate will evaluate.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Field Sales Engineer roles?
TN has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and no waiting period tied to a fiscal year start date. H-1B visa requires employer sponsorship through a lottery with roughly 25 to 30 percent selection odds and a mandatory October 1 start. For a Field Sales Engineer whose degree qualifies under the Engineer category, TN is a faster and more predictable path, assuming your employer is willing to structure the offer correctly.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must prepare a support letter on company letterhead that states your job title, a description of duties in engineering terms, the anticipated length of employment, and your qualifications. This letter is the core of your TN application. CBP or the consulate uses it to confirm the role fits the Engineer category. Your employer does not file anything with USCIS for a Canadian citizen applying at the border.
Where can I find Field Sales Engineer jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals searching for roles with TN visa sponsorship. Rather than sorting through job listings where sponsorship policies are unclear, Migrate Mate surfaces employers already familiar with TN filings, which reduces the back-and-forth with recruiters who have never heard of the Engineer category.
Can I switch employers while on TN status as a Field Sales Engineer?
Yes, but you must obtain a new TN authorization tied to your new employer before you start work. For Canadian citizens, that means a new border or preclearance application with a fresh support letter from the incoming employer. You cannot simply transfer your existing TN status the way an H-1B portability rule might allow. Plan your transition so there is no gap between authorization and your first day.
