Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Mental Health Counselor
Verify your state licensure before applying
TN sponsorship for Mental Health Counselors requires active U.S. state licensure or eligibility for it. Research the licensing board requirements in your target state early, since reciprocity rules and exam requirements vary and can delay your start date.
Get your foreign credentials evaluated formally
Canadian and Mexican counseling degrees must be evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluation service before most employers will sponsor you. A course-by-course evaluation confirming a master's-level equivalency removes the most common employer objection upfront.
Target employers with active visa sponsorship experience
Search Migrate Mate to find Mental Health Counselor roles at employers with recent visa filings, so you're approaching organizations already experienced with sponsoring work visas rather than educating HR from scratch.
Focus on hospital systems and federally funded clinics
Federally Qualified Health Centers and large hospital networks hire Mental Health Counselors under structured HR processes and are more familiar with visa sponsorship than private practices, which often lack the administrative capacity to manage work visa requirements. These larger organizations typically have experience sponsoring workers on various visa types and established procedures for supporting applicants through the sponsorship process.
Confirm employer support letter requirements before accepting offer
Your TN status is tied to the specific employer, worksite, and job duties you present at your port of entry. If your role involves multiple clinic locations or telehealth across state lines, confirm with your employer that their support letter clearly documents all work locations you'll service before you arrive at the border or consulate.
Prepare a degree-to-role alignment letter for Canadians
Canadian citizens entering at the port of entry need documentation that ties your counseling degree directly to the offered role. A one-page letter from your employer explaining how your credentials match the TN occupational category accelerates CBP review significantly.

Find Mental Health Counselor JobsMental Health Counselor TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Mental Health Counselor qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Mental Health Counselor is listed as a qualifying occupation under the USMCA TN category, provided you hold at least a master's degree in counseling, psychology, or a directly related field. Your employer will need to prepare a support letter documenting the role requirements and your qualifications. For Canadian citizens, you'll present this letter at the U.S. port of entry; for Mexican citizens, your employer will submit it with your application at a U.S. consulate.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Mental Health Counselors?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can apply and start work without waiting for a selection round. H-1B is subject to an annual cap and a lottery, meaning most applicants wait over a year before they can begin. For Canadian Mental Health Counselors, TN is almost always the faster and more predictable path to U.S. employment.
Can I use Migrate Mate to find Mental Health Counselor jobs that offer TN sponsorship?
Yes. Migrate Mate filters Mental Health Counselor roles by employer experience with visa sponsorship, so you're only seeing companies that have recently sponsored work visas and understand the sponsorship process. That removes the back-and-forth of approaching employers unfamiliar with visa-sponsored hiring, who may not be prepared to write the required support letter or navigate the TN requirements.
Do I need a U.S. state license before my employer can sponsor my TN visa?
Most TN sponsorships for Mental Health Counselors require either an active state license or documented eligibility for one. Some employers will extend an offer contingent on you obtaining licensure before your start date, but CBP expects the role to meet the professional standard at the time of entry. Confirm your employer's specific requirement before presenting your credentials at the port of entry.
Can Mexican citizens get TN sponsorship as Mental Health Counselors, and is there a cap?
Mexican citizens are eligible for TN sponsorship as Mental Health Counselors under USMCA, but the TN category for Mexican nationals does have an annual numerical limit, unlike the unlimited allocation for Canadian citizens. Applications are processed through a U.S. consulate rather than at the border, and USCIS handles the petition, so planning around consular appointment availability is part of the timeline.
