Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a NP
Verify your NP credentials meet TN requirements
TN classification requires a registered nurse license, not just an advanced practice credential. Confirm your provincial or national nursing license is active and translates to RN-level authorization under U.S. standards before approaching employers.
Target employers with existing TN filing experience
Large health systems, academic medical centers, and multi-state hospital networks are more likely to understand TN sponsorship for NPs than small private practices. Prioritize organizations that already have an immigration contact or HR team familiar with USMCA filings.
Clarify the job offer letter must specify RN duties
CBP officers review the offer letter at the border for Canadians. Your letter must describe registered nursing duties, not just the NP title. Vague or administrative-heavy descriptions have led to TN denials at ports of entry.
Understand the consulate process as a Mexican national
Mexican NPs apply for TN status at a U.S. consulate, not at the border. Book your appointment early, since wait times vary by location. Bring the certified job offer, your nursing degree, and your Mexican nursing license translated into English.
Use Migrate Mate to find NP roles offering TN sponsorship
Searching broadly wastes time on employers who won't file. Migrate Mate filters NP jobs by TN visa sponsorship so you're only reviewing roles where the employer has already committed to supporting your status.
Negotiate TN renewal timelines before accepting an offer
TN status is granted in up to three-year increments with unlimited renewals. Confirm your employer understands renewal is required and will file on time. Gaps in employer support have caused NPs to fall out of status between hospital contract renewals.

Find NP JobsNP TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the TN visa cover nurse practitioners specifically?
TN visa classification covers registered nurses, which includes nurse practitioners when the job duties involve direct registered nursing care. The position title alone isn't sufficient. The offer letter must describe qualifying RN-level clinical duties, and your active nursing license must correspond to the RN category. Advanced practice credentials support the application but don't substitute for the underlying RN license requirement.
How does TN compare to H-1B for NP roles?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and Canadians can obtain status at the border the same day with an approved offer letter. H-1B requires employer sponsorship months in advance, lottery selection, and USCIS petition approval. For NPs with an active RN license, TN is faster and more predictable, though it doesn't lead to a green card on its own the way some H-1B pathways can.
Where can I find NP jobs that already support TN sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It surfaces NP roles where employers are open to TN visa sponsorship, saving you from filtering through postings that require U.S. citizenship or permanent residency only. Targeting employers who already understand TN filings significantly reduces the time from application to start date.
Can a Canadian NP get TN status at the border without a petition?
Yes. Canadian citizens can apply for TN status directly at a U.S. port of entry or pre-clearance location without filing a petition with USCIS first. You bring your job offer letter, nursing license, and supporting credentials. CBP reviews the package on the spot. The offer letter describing qualifying RN duties is the document most likely to be scrutinized.
What happens to my TN status if my NP employer changes ownership or closes?
TN status is tied to the specific employer named in your filing. If your employer is acquired, merged, or closes, you generally need a new TN filing before starting with the successor entity unless the employment relationship is truly continuous and materially unchanged. Mexicans will need a new consular appointment. Canadians can seek a new TN at a port of entry with an updated offer letter.
