TN Visa Occupational Therapist Jobs
Occupational Therapist roles qualify for TN visa sponsorship under USMCA, covering both Canadian and Mexican licensed OTs. Your degree must be from an accredited program, and you'll need your state OT license before most U.S. employers will file. Canadian citizens can apply at the border; Mexicans apply at a U.S. consulate.

Verify your credential equivalency before applying
U.S. employers and CBP officers need to confirm your OT degree meets accreditation standards. If you trained outside the U.S. or Canada, get a credential evaluation through NBCOT before your first interview to avoid delays at the offer stage.
Obtain state licensure before targeting employers
Most U.S. health systems won't initiate TN visa sponsorship until you hold an active license in the state where you'll work. Identify your target state early and sit the NBCOT exam, since license reciprocity between states isn't automatic.
Target hospital systems and rehab networks with TN experience
Inpatient rehab facilities, acute care hospitals, and pediatric health networks hire OTs at volume and file TN documentation routinely. Asking recruiters directly whether their HR team has processed TN letters before saves weeks of back-and-forth.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers actively sponsoring TN roles
Search Migrate Mate to surface OT positions at employers with recent visa filings and experience sponsoring work visas. Filtering by role type and location cuts the prospecting time most Canadian and Mexican OTs spend chasing dead-end listings.
Request a TN support letter that names your specific duties
CBP officers scrutinize whether the role description actually matches the USMCA Occupational Therapist category. Your employer's letter must list specific clinical duties and explicitly reference your OT licensure, not just your job title.
Prepare for same-day admission if you're Canadian
Canadian citizens can present TN documentation at a U.S. land port or preclearance airport and receive status the same day. Bring your job offer letter, license certificate, and degree transcript as originals, not copies, since CBP officers regularly request them.
Occupational Therapist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Occupational Therapist qualify as a TN visa profession?
Yes. Occupational Therapist is explicitly listed as a qualifying profession under the USMCA TN visa category. To qualify, you must hold a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in occupational therapy and possess a valid state license or meet all requirements for the state where you'll practice.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for OT roles?
The TN visa has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no lengthy USCIS petition process, which means you can start work within days of a job offer if you're Canadian. H-1B visa requires employer sponsorship through a random lottery, a wait of up to a year, and significant filing costs. For licensed OTs who qualify under USMCA, TN is almost always the faster path.
Can I find OT employers who are already familiar with TN sponsorship?
Yes, and targeting those employers specifically saves significant time. Migrate Mate lets you search for Occupational Therapist positions at employers with recent visa filings, so you're not starting the education process from scratch with every recruiter you contact.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must issue a support letter on company letterhead that describes your specific OT duties, confirms your job title matches the USMCA category, states your intended length of employment, and lists your credentials. The letter isn't filed with any agency in advance for Canadians but is presented directly to CBP at the port of entry.
Does a Mexican OT face different requirements than a Canadian OT?
Yes. Mexican nationals cannot apply for TN status at the border and must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate in Mexico before traveling. The annual TN allocation for Mexican nationals is also capped at 5,500 per year under USMCA, though this cap has not historically been reached for OT-specific roles.
