Verify your PT license transfers cleanly
TN adjudicators want a license from your destination state, not just your home province or Mexico. Start the endorsement process early, some states take 8 to 12 weeks to issue a license to foreign-trained PTs.
Target employers with rehab department infrastructure
Hospital systems, multi-site orthopedic groups, and sports medicine networks already have HR teams familiar with TN documentation. Independent clinics often don't, which slows the offer-to-start timeline significantly.
Request a support letter that names the USMCA category
Your employer's offer letter must explicitly state 'Physical Therapist' as the USMCA TN category. A letter that only lists your job title without naming the treaty category can cause CBP to request additional documentation at the border.
Search for TN-ready PT roles using Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Physical Therapist roles by TN sponsorship status, so you're applying to employers who already understand the filing requirements rather than explaining TN from scratch during every interview.
Carry CGFNS or credential evaluation documents if foreign-trained
If you trained outside the U.S. or Canada, CBP officers may ask how your degree maps to the USMCA Physical Therapist category. A CGFNS credential evaluation or equivalency letter closes that gap before it becomes a problem.
Understand the Mexican TN allocation before accepting a timeline
Mexican nationals are subject to a 5,500 annual TN cap and must process through a U.S. consulate rather than at the border. Factor consulate appointment lead times into your start-date negotiation with any prospective employer.

Find Orthopedic Physical Therapist JobsOrthopedic Physical Therapist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Orthopedic Physical Therapist qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. The USMCA lists Physical Therapist as an eligible TN occupation. An orthopedic specialization falls squarely within that category, whether you're working in an outpatient orthopedic clinic, a sports medicine center, or a hospital-based musculoskeletal rehab program. Your offer letter should name the USMCA category as 'Physical Therapist' regardless of how the employer titles the role.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Physical Therapist roles?
TN is faster and more predictable for PT roles. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian applicants, and Canadian PTs can receive TN status at the port of entry the same day. H-1B requires employer sponsorship through a petition process, a lottery selection, and months of processing. For most Canadian PTs with a qualifying job offer, TN is the more direct path to starting work in the U.S.
Do I need a U.S. state PT license before applying for TN status?
You'll need a valid license from the state where you'll be working, and CBP will want to see it at the border or consulate. The complication is that some states require a Social Security Number to issue a license, creating a catch-22. Talk to your employer early about whether they can support a provisional start arrangement or help you navigate the licensing sequence before your TN appointment.
Where can I find Orthopedic Physical Therapist jobs that offer TN sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking TN-eligible roles. You can filter Physical Therapist positions by sponsorship status and connect with employers who are already prepared to support the TN process, rather than spending interviews educating hiring managers about what TN status requires.
Can I switch orthopedic employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you need new TN authorization tied to the new employer before you start work there. Canadian PTs can often get this processed at the border with a new offer letter and employer support documents. You can't simply transfer your existing TN to a new employer the way some other visa categories allow a grace period or transfer petition.
