Align your credentials to Industrial Engineers
TN visa eligibility for Production Managers falls under the Industrial Engineers category. Gather transcripts and any professional engineering certifications before applying, since CBP officers will assess whether your credentials match this classification directly.
Target manufacturers with established TN hiring
Focus your search on large manufacturers in automotive, aerospace, and food processing sectors. These industries regularly sponsor TN visas because production operations require cross-border professionals, and their HR teams already understand the TN filing process.
Request a detailed support letter from your employer
The employer support letter must specify your job duties, your degree's connection to Industrial Engineering, your Canadian or Mexican citizenship, and your U.S. work location. A vague letter is the leading cause of TN denials at the port of entry.
Search for TN-ready roles using Migrate Mate
Filter Production Manager openings by TN visa sponsorship using Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers actively hiring under USMCA categories. This saves time compared to filtering manually through general job postings that rarely specify visa support upfront.
Prepare for scope-of-practice questions at the border
CBP officers sometimes question whether a Production Manager role is distinct from a general manager position. Bring documentation showing your responsibilities are engineering-focused, such as process optimization reports or quality systems documentation, not just supervisory duties.
Understand the TN renewal timeline for ongoing employment
TN status is granted in up to three-year increments with no cap on renewals for Canadians. File your renewal package before your current status expires to avoid a gap in work authorization, since there is no grace period for overstayed TN status.

Find Production Manager JobsProduction Manager TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Production Manager role qualify for a TN visa?
Yes, but the classification depends on how your duties are framed. TN visas for Production Managers are typically approved under the Industrial Engineers category, which requires a degree in industrial engineering or a closely related field. If your role is described as general operations management without an engineering foundation, CBP may deny the application. Your job offer letter must clearly connect your responsibilities to engineering principles such as process design, workflow optimization, or quality systems management.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Production Manager roles?
For Canadian citizens, the TN visa is faster and more predictable than the H-1B. There is no lottery, no annual cap, and Canadians can receive approval at a U.S. port of entry the same day they apply. H-1B selection is lottery-based and limited to 85,000 slots annually, with a wait of months before work can begin. Mexican citizens face a 5,500-per-year TN cap but still avoid the H-1B lottery entirely, making TN the more reliable path for qualifying Production Manager roles under USMCA.
What documents does a Production Manager need to apply for TN status?
You need a valid Canadian or Mexican passport, a detailed employer support letter, and proof of your engineering-related degree or equivalent credentials. Canadians apply directly at a U.S. port of entry and pay the CBP processing fee. Mexican citizens must schedule a consular interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate. CBP or the consular officer may also ask for documentation of your past production management work to verify the role's engineering scope.
Where can I find Production Manager jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is designed specifically for this search. It filters Production Manager openings by TN visa sponsorship, so you're not combing through postings that don't support USMCA hires. Most general job postings don't specify visa support, which makes it difficult to identify employers already familiar with TN filings. Using a platform built around visa sponsorship data significantly reduces time spent on roles where sponsorship isn't available.
Can I switch Production Manager employers while on a TN visa?
Yes, but you cannot simply update your existing TN status. Each new employer requires a fresh TN application with a new support letter, and you must receive approval before starting work with the new company. Canadians can apply at a port of entry when changing employers. There is no formal grace period between TN statuses, so timing the transition carefully with your new employer's filing timeline is essential to maintaining continuous work authorization.
