Align your credentials to the Management Consultant category
TN visa status for consulting roles requires a baccalaureate degree, not just experience. Confirm your degree is in a field directly related to your consulting work before approaching employers, since CBP officers assess the degree-to-role match at entry.
Target employers with active consulting project pipelines
Focus on firms that regularly place consultants at client sites across borders. Companies already familiar with TN documentation for consultants will process your offer letter and support letter faster than those encountering the visa category for the first time.
Request a detailed support letter covering all client engagements
For Professional Services Consultants, CBP scrutinizes whether the described duties are genuinely managerial or advisory rather than technical. Your employer's support letter should explicitly describe decision-making authority and project scope, not just list deliverables or billable hours.
Use Migrate Mate to filter roles by visa sponsorship experience
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers with recent visa filings who are experienced with work visa sponsorship for consulting roles. Targeting companies with a proven track record of sponsoring work visas increases the likelihood they'll be willing to prepare a support letter and navigate the TN visa process at your port of entry or consulate.
Understand that changing clients can trigger a new TN filing
If your consulting work shifts to a substantially different client or project scope mid-term, USCIS considers this a material change requiring an amended TN petition. Confirm with your employer before onboarding how client transitions are handled to avoid unauthorized work periods.
Prepare for Mexican nationals' consular appointment timeline early
Mexican citizens must obtain TN status through a U.S. consulate and face the annual allocation cap. Scheduling delays at high-volume posts can push your start date by weeks, so begin the consular appointment process as soon as your employer issues the offer letter.
Professional Services Consultant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Professional Services Consultant role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, if your employer classifies the role under the USMCA's Management Consultant category. CBP requires that your duties involve providing advice or recommendations on management practices, not primarily hands-on technical execution. Your degree must be in a related field, such as business, management, or economics, and your employer's support letter must clearly describe advisory responsibilities.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Professional Services Consultant positions?
TN has no lottery and no annual cap for Canadians, so you can start the process any time of year and get a decision at the border or consulate within days. H-1B visa requires surviving a random lottery and waiting months for USCIS adjudication. The tradeoff is that TN doesn't allow dual intent, meaning it can complicate a future green card application in ways H-1B does not.
Where can I find Professional Services Consultant jobs that already offer TN sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter by TN visa sponsorship and see which employers have a history of hiring Canadian and Mexican professionals in consulting roles. That saves time you'd otherwise spend confirming whether a company is willing and able to support TN documentation before you apply.
Can I switch employers on a TN visa if I'm already working as a consultant in the U.S.?
Yes, but TN status is tied to a specific employer. Before you start with a new company, that employer must either submit an I-129 petition to USCIS on your behalf or you must travel and re-enter at a port of entry with the new support letter and documentation. Working for a new employer before that step is complete puts you out of status.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN visa application?
Your employer must issue a support letter on company letterhead that states your job title, a description of your consulting duties, the duration of your employment, your qualifications, and your compensation arrangement. For Canadian citizens entering at the border, this letter goes directly to CBP along with your degree credentials and passport. Mexican nationals submit the same package through the U.S. consulate.
