Align your degree to the SDR role
TN visa classification requires your degree to match your job duties. A business, marketing, or communications degree supports an SDR role more cleanly than an unrelated field, so frame your credentials around the consultative and analytical functions of the position before applying.
Target companies with recent visa filings
Search for employers with recent visa filings to identify companies experienced with sponsoring work visas in sales or business development roles. Prior filing activity signals that a company already has internal processes for work authorization, making them more likely to support your TN visa application through their legal team.
Request a support letter before your border crossing
Canadian citizens can get TN status at a port of entry, but your employer must provide a detailed support letter describing your role, qualifications, and the TN category being claimed. Arriving without this letter is the most common reason for delays or refusals.
Clarify your role title during offer negotiations
If the offer letter says 'Sales Development Representative' but the actual duties are managerial or consultative, ask HR to reflect the substantive work in your title or job description. The title on your TN petition must support the professional category you're claiming.
Use Migrate Mate to find SDR roles with TN sponsorship
Most job postings don't specify which visa types an employer will support. Migrate Mate filters SDR openings by employers with recent visa filings, so you can focus your applications on companies experienced with sponsoring work visas.
Plan your Mexican consulate appointment early
Mexican citizens must apply at a U.S. consulate rather than at the border, and appointment availability varies by location. Schedule your consular interview as soon as your offer is finalized to avoid gaps between your start date and your visa approval.
Sales Development Representative TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an SDR role qualify for TN visa status?
It depends on how the role is defined. TN visas require the position to fit a listed USMCA professional category, most commonly Management Consultant or, in some cases, Economist or Computer Systems Analyst if the duties align. An SDR role built around consultative sales, market analysis, or business strategy typically qualifies, but a role focused purely on cold outreach volume is harder to support. Your job offer and employer support letter need to emphasize the professional and analytical functions.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Sales Development Representative jobs?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no USCIS petition required for Canadian citizens crossing at the border. H-1B visa requires a lottery entry in March, a multi-month USCIS adjudication, and employer filing fees. For Canadian and Mexican professionals, TN is generally faster and more predictable for SDR roles that meet the specialty occupation and USMCA category requirements.
Can I switch SDR employers on a TN visa?
Yes, but you need new TN authorization for each employer change. Canadian citizens can get a new TN at a port of entry with an updated support letter from the new employer. Mexican citizens must schedule a new consular appointment. You can't start working for the new employer until the new TN is approved, so build enough lead time into your transition.
Where can I find SDR jobs that already sponsor TN visas?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It surfaces SDR openings from employers with documented TN and work visa sponsorship history, so you're not guessing about which companies will support your application. Generic job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type, which wastes time on roles where TN support is unlikely.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer needs to provide a signed support letter on company letterhead that includes your job title, a description of your duties, the TN professional category being claimed, your start date, and confirmation that you hold the required degree. For Canadian citizens, this letter is presented at the port of entry. For Mexican citizens, it accompanies the DS-160 and is reviewed at the consular interview.
