Verify your degree meets TN requirements
TN visa classification for Social Workers requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura specifically in social work. A degree in psychology, counseling, or human services won't qualify, even if your job duties overlap substantially with case management.
Confirm your state license before applying
Most U.S. employers require licensure as a condition of hire for case manager roles. Research the Clinical Social Worker licensing requirements in your target state early, since reciprocity from Canadian provincial credentials isn't automatic.
Target healthcare systems and government-contracted agencies
Hospital networks, county behavioral health departments, and nonprofits holding government contracts regularly sponsor TN professionals because their HR teams already manage complex compliance requirements. These employers are far more likely to understand TN paperwork than small private practices.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers with recent visa filings
Search Migrate Mate to identify Social Work Case Manager roles at employers with recent visa filings. Targeting companies experienced with work visa sponsorship cuts down negotiation time over whether they'll support your TN application at the port of entry or consulate.
Get your support letter right before the port of entry
For Canadian citizens, CBP adjudicates TN status on the spot. Your employer's support letter must specify your social work degree, the case manager role, your intended duration, and your compensation arrangement. A vague letter is the most common reason for delays at the border.
Clarify who files what before accepting an offer
Canadians handle TN admission at the port of entry with employer-provided documents, while Mexican citizens need a consular appointment. Confirm upfront whether your employer will prepare the required support letter outlining your job duties, qualifications, and TN eligibility so there are no surprises after you sign.
Social Work Case Manager TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Social Work Case Manager role actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided your degree is specifically in social work. The USMCA's Social Worker category covers case management roles when the employer's job description requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura in social work. If your degree is in a related field like counseling or psychology, the TN classification won't apply, even if your day-to-day duties are identical.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Social Work Case Manager positions?
TN is almost always the faster and simpler path for Canadians and Mexicans in this role. There's no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and Canadian citizens can receive TN status at the port of entry the same day. H-1B visa requires a lottery selection, USCIS petition processing, and significantly more employer paperwork. For qualifying social workers, TN is the practical first choice.
Can Mexican social workers get TN status as easily as Canadian social workers?
The qualification requirements are the same, but the process differs. Mexican citizens must schedule a nonimmigrant visa interview at a U.S. consulate rather than presenting at a port of entry. Consular appointment availability and processing timelines vary by location, so Mexican applicants should build extra lead time into their start date negotiations with employers.
What should I look for in an employer willing to sponsor TN status for this role?
Prioritize employers who have experience with visa sponsorship, since they'll already have HR processes in place. Use Migrate Mate to identify Social Work Case Manager openings at organizations with recent visa filings. Healthcare systems, county agencies, and federally contracted nonprofits are the most likely employers to support TN applications in social services.
Does my Canadian or Mexican social work license transfer to U.S. case manager jobs?
Not automatically. U.S. states set their own licensure requirements, and most case manager roles require a state-issued license such as LSW or LCSW. Some states have streamlined pathways for internationally trained social workers, but you'll typically need to apply for licensure separately. Confirm your target state's requirements before accepting an offer, since TN status doesn't override state licensing rules.
