Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a UX Designer
Frame your portfolio around systems thinking
TN approval hinges on demonstrating computer systems analyst work, not just visual design. Structure your portfolio to foreground user research methodology, information architecture decisions, and usability testing frameworks rather than final UI deliverables.
Target employers with dedicated UX teams
Companies with in-house UX practices produce offer letters that naturally describe systems analysis work. Solo-designer roles at small employers often lack the organizational context needed to support a clear specialty occupation classification in your TN documentation.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-ready UX roles
Search Migrate Mate to identify UX Designer positions at employers with recent visa filings and experience sponsoring work visas. Filtering by employers experienced with visa sponsorship saves weeks of outreach to companies unfamiliar with USMCA professional categories and the TN visa process.
Request a detailed offer letter before your port entry
Your offer letter must describe duties in systems analyst terms: user research, interaction modeling, usability evaluation. Vague language like 'design mobile apps' gives CBP officers grounds to question TN eligibility before you cross the border.
Verify your credential maps to a qualifying degree field
CBP expects a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field. A fine arts or communications degree requires additional documentation showing the curriculum included systems or human-computer interaction coursework relevant to the analyst classification.
Prepare for Mexican citizen consular processing timelines
Unlike Canadians who can apply at a port of entry, Mexican citizens schedule a consular interview and typically wait several weeks for appointment availability. Build that window into your start date negotiation so your employer's timeline remains workable.

Find UX Designer JobsUX Designer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a UX Designer role actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, but the job duties determine eligibility, not the title. TN classification for UX Designers falls under the computer systems analyst category, which requires the role to involve systematic analysis of user needs, interaction architecture, and interface systems. Roles focused purely on graphic production or brand design without an analytical systems component are less likely to qualify.
How does TN compare to H-1B for UX Designer positions?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can pursue it any time of year without competing for a limited slot. H-1B selection is random and capped annually, meaning a qualified UX Designer could wait years before receiving authorization. Mexican citizens do face a TN allocation limit, but TN remains faster and more predictable than the H-1B process for most applicants.
What documents does a Canadian UX Designer need to cross at the border on TN status?
You need a valid Canadian passport, a support letter from your U.S. employer on company letterhead describing your duties and salary, proof of your qualifying degree, and the CBP filing fee. The officer reviews everything at the port of entry and typically issues your TN status the same day. Bring your portfolio summary if your degree field is not an exact match to the role.
How can I find UX Designer jobs where employers already understand TN sponsorship?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by TN visa sponsorship, so you can focus applications on employers who have already navigated USMCA classifications. This matters for UX roles specifically because many employers confuse TN with H-1B and incorrectly assume a lottery or cap applies, which causes them to reject candidates unnecessarily before the process starts.
Can I switch UX Designer employers while on TN status?
Yes, but your TN is employer-specific, so you cannot begin work with a new employer until your new TN is approved. Canadian citizens can get a new TN at a port of entry the same day they apply. Mexican citizens need to schedule a new consular appointment. Plan the transition so there is no gap between your last day with the current employer and your first day with the new one.
