Ultrasound Technologist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an ultrasound technologist in California?
California does not issue a state license for ultrasound technologists, so the path to employment runs through national certification. Most California employers require credentials from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Candidates complete an accredited diagnostic medical sonography program, then pass the relevant registry exams. Hospitals in California, including large systems, strongly favor applicants who hold active ARDMS or ARRT credentials before applying.
How much do ultrasound technologists make in California?
Ultrasound technologists in California earn a median of about $128,530 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,890 for the lowest 10% to over $177,780 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire ultrasound technologists in California?
Employers hiring ultrasound technologists in California right now include Cardinal Health, UCLA Health, and Sharp HealthCare, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's density of large integrated health systems and independent imaging networks means openings appear across the state year-round.
Which California cities have the most ultrasound technologist jobs?
Fresno, Los Angeles, and Chula Vista account for the highest concentration of ultrasound technologist openings in California. Los Angeles and San Diego drive volume through their large academic medical centers and sprawling outpatient networks, while the Bay Area's concentration of major health systems and specialty hospitals generates steady demand for experienced sonographers in cardiac and vascular subspecialties.
Are there remote ultrasound technologist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Ultrasound technology is a hands-on clinical role requiring direct patient contact and on-site equipment operation, so the overwhelming majority of openings require in-person work. About 0% of ultrasound technologist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are almost exclusively in tele-ultrasound quality review or administrative imaging coordination rather than direct scanning.
How can I get hired as an ultrasound technologist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new-graduate or limited-experience position through a large California hospital system. Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, and Sutter Health periodically post new-grad sonographer roles designed for candidates who have completed an accredited program but have limited post-graduation hours. Moving laterally from a radiology aide, sonography clinical intern, or imaging technician role is another common route into paid sonographer work at California facilities.
Where can I find and apply to ultrasound technologist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to ultrasound technologist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings to see roles that match your specialty, location, and experience level, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
