Position Overview
BLOC Resources is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer SR 1 to provide engineering and technical support for Southern Nuclear's Extended Power Uprate (EPU) initiatives.
Southern Nuclear is pursuing Extended Power Uprates for both Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) and Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) units. The selected candidate will support engineering activities associated with evaluating plant systems, equipment, design bases, and operating conditions under proposed EPU conditions.
This position will support the development and review of Design Input Requests (DIRs) used by external Architect-Engineer (A/E) firms to perform EPU-related analyses. The engineer will also assist with reviewing and validating technical Task Reports and other engineering deliverables through the owner-acceptance process.
The ideal candidate will bring substantial commercial nuclear power experience and a strong understanding of nuclear plant systems, engineering design, operations, licensing, configuration management, and/or power uprate projects.
Key Responsibilities
Extended Power Uprate Engineering Support
- Provide engineering and technical support for Extended Power Uprate projects involving PWR and BWR nuclear generating units.
- Support development, preparation, review, and validation of Design Input Requests (DIRs).
- Assist in identifying and documenting plant design information required by external A/E firms to perform EPU analyses.
- Review technical assumptions, design inputs, system information, calculations, analyses, and engineering documentation.
- Support evaluation of plant systems and equipment under proposed uprated operating conditions.
- Review EPU-related Task Reports and supporting technical deliverables.
- Participate in the owner-acceptance and technical-validation process for engineering analyses performed by external organizations.
- Identify technical questions, inconsistencies, gaps, or additional information required to support engineering evaluations.
- Coordinate resolution of technical comments with internal engineering organizations and external A/E firms.
- Support potential plant modifications identified through EPU engineering analyses.
Engineering Design & Systems Support
- Review engineering analyses, calculations, technical reports, design changes, and design-input documentation.
- Evaluate plant system interactions and equipment performance associated with EPU conditions.
- Support assessment of potential impacts to mechanical systems, components, equipment, and plant interfaces.
- Evaluate proposed engineering changes against existing plant configuration and design requirements.
- Support maintenance of appropriate engineering and design-basis documentation.
- Assist with technical evaluations involving plant modifications and configuration changes.
- Apply sound engineering judgment when evaluating technical issues and proposed solutions.
- Coordinate with systems engineering, design engineering, operations, licensing, and other technical disciplines.
Nuclear Plant Systems & Operations
- Apply knowledge of commercial nuclear power plant systems and operating principles when reviewing EPU-related engineering activities.
- Evaluate engineering recommendations from an operational and system-performance perspective.
- Consider system interactions, operating procedures, equipment limitations, and plant response when reviewing proposed changes.
- Work with operations and engineering personnel to identify potential implementation or operational concerns.
- Support troubleshooting and resolution of technical issues that arise during project development.
Licensing & Regulatory Support
Depending on the candidate's experience, responsibilities may also include:
- Supporting nuclear licensing evaluations associated with Extended Power Uprates.
- Assisting with preparation or review of technical information supporting regulatory activities.
- Evaluating potential licensing impacts associated with plant modifications or EPU conditions.
- Supporting technical development of information associated with license-amendment activities.
- Coordinating with licensing personnel regarding engineering analyses and technical conclusions.
- Supporting responses to technical questions associated with regulatory reviews.
- Ensuring engineering documentation appropriately supports applicable licensing and design-basis requirements.
SNC Fleet Experience – Highly Preferred
Previous experience within the Southern Nuclear fleet is highly desirable, particularly experience supporting:

Work Environment

Compensation
$40.00–$42.50 per hour
Final compensation will be based on the selected candidate's commercial nuclear experience, Southern Nuclear fleet knowledge, EPU/power-uprate experience, engineering background, and overall qualifications.
