SUMMARY
Under limited supervision of the Hospital Safety Manager, the Healthcare Ergonomics Program Coordinator plans, implements, and provides direction for the healthcare ergonomics and safe patient handling and mobility (SPHM) programs at ANMC. The position is responsible for the data management and statistical analysis needed to: develop, implement, and manage the program; monitor and report outcomes; and, bring knowledge and evidence-based guidelines to the program. The emphasis is on meeting the ergonomic and SPHM needs of the organization as well as contributing to the organizational goals for experience of care, population health, reducing costs, and care team well-being.
Responsibilities
- Fosters a Culture of Safety and strives to establish best practices for improved SPHM for employee and patient safety.
- Promotes new and existing programs and services to staff.
- Ensures the standards of The Joint Commission, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and other regulatory or accreditation bodies are met and maintained.
- Responsible for management of the activities of the SPHM program and oversees the implementation of processes and procedures.
- Participates in various clinical workgroups and committees to align with patient safety initiatives.
- Provides input to administration regarding program strategic plans and priorities, including resource allocation.
- Analyzes and reports program outcomes to administration.
- Collaborates with multi-disciplinary stakeholders to coordinate resources to achieve the program's goals and provide training and education to staff throughout the hospital to ensure compliance.
- Schedules routine environmental rounds with applicable stakeholders.
- Interacts with vendors and oversees equipment selection and purchases to meet current and future needs for ergonomics and SPHM.
- Oversees and organizes any contracts and activities related to the program.
- Leads the Patient Handling and Mobility Assessments (PHAMA) process for all patient care areas, ensuring SPHM needs are identified. Communicate findings and recommendations to Leadership and stakeholders.
- Implements corporate ergonomic initiatives within the hospital, including but not limited to completing ergonomic assessments proactively and in response to employee injuries with written recommendations to improve the workstation and participates in furniture and equipment selection.
- Reviews and validates data for reporting and other initiatives.
- Provides professional consultation in areas with unique ergonomic situations; sonography, lab, pharmacy etc.
- Provides evidence-based practice for ergonomics and SPHM in all hospital settings, including ergonomic and construction design consultation.
- Participates in investigations on employee injuries and other occupational exposure events.
- Provides support on performing routine inspections of hospital grounds and facilities concerning pest management.
- Works cooperatively with inter-disciplinary teams to control both animal and insect pests that come into or around the hospital.
- Provides support maintaining meticulous records adhering to regulatory requirements for the management of hazardous waste, including Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous waste disposal.
- Performs and documents weekly inspections of storage area(s).
- Maintains storage area(s).
- Creates reports for internal and external audiences.
- Provides training to staff involved with the disposal process.
- Participates in pre-construction planning, assisting Project Managers in identifying safety hazards before construction occurs.
- Performs periodic hazard surveillance inspections for assigned units and inspects construction projects with applicable occupational safety standards.
- Provides technical assistance to ANTHC staff and supervisors.
- Assists in the preparation of presentations and program material for meetings.
- Instructs and educates medical staff, administration, board members, and professional and non-clinical staff on areas of Safety & Environmental Management.
- Assists in planning and execution of various occupational safety, environment of care, and life safety initiatives related to the accreditation of the Alaska Native Medical Center.
- Participates in various committee meetings on behalf of the program and provides information back to the team for follow-up as needed.
- Must be able to perform the department's professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies and other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Bachelor’s degree in related field (Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Human Factors Engineering). Progressively responsible professional work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.
Experience
Four (4) years’ experience in ergonomics, SPHM, occupational health and safety, or related areas.
Certification
- Certification through the Association of Safe Patient Handling Professionals (ASPHP); Certified Safe Patient Handling Associate (CSPHA).
- Ergonomics assessment certification through a nationally recognized organization (CEAS, HEAS, or similar), earned within one year of hire.
