JOB SUMMARY
The Equipment Operator is a foundational role responsible for the safe and efficient operation of mobile heavy equipment used in the extraction, transportation, and processing of aggregate materials (sand, gravel, and crushed stone). As a key contributor to the production cycle, the Operator ensures that raw materials move seamlessly from the pit to the plant and that finished products are managed effectively in stockpiles. Beyond machinery operation, this role is deeply integrated into the site’s maintenance and safety culture, requiring a "Safety First" mindset and a willingness to perform cross-functional duties, including manual labor and plant housekeeping—to maintain an elite operational environment.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Safely operate entry-to-mid-level mobile equipment, including but not limited to Haul Trucks (off-road), Water Trucks, and Front-End Loaders (e.g., CAT 980/988 series).
- Transport raw materials from the extraction pit to the primary crusher and move finished aggregate products from the plant to designated stockpiles.
- Maintain the integrity of product stockpiles by ensuring materials are separated correctly to prevent contamination.
- Operate water trucks to manage dust control on haul roads and utilize equipment to maintain berms, ramps, and safe traffic flow throughout the facility.
- Conduct rigorous daily inspections of vehicle systems (brakes, steering, fluids, tires, and gauges) to identify potential hazards or mechanical issues.
- Perform routine PM tasks, including greasing moving parts, checking oil levels, cleaning cabs, and assisting mechanics with minor repairs (e.g., replacing idlers, belts, or bearings).
- Use Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to identify and report equipment malfunctions or unusual sounds to the maintenance team immediately to minimize downtime.
- Operate all machinery in strict accordance with MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations and Martin Marietta’s internal safety policies.
- Participate in the "Guardian Angel" safety program by identifying "near miss" hazards, wearing all required PPE, and looking out for the safety of coworkers and visiting contractors.
- Ensure all operations comply with environmental standards, specifically regarding dust control and spill prevention in the yard.
- When not operating equipment, assist in plant operations which may involve manual shoveling, sweeping around conveyors, cleaning under crushers, and general site cleanup.
- Maintain constant contact with plant operators and other drivers via CB radio or hand signals to coordinate safe movement and material flow.
- Accurately complete daily production logs, maintenance reports, and safety forms.

Which chemicals and materials companies sponsor E-3 visas in California?
California's largest E-3 sponsors in this sector include petroleum and refining companies concentrated in the Los Angeles Basin, specialty chemical producers in the Bay Area, and semiconductor materials firms in Silicon Valley. Companies such as Chevron, Lam Research, Applied Materials, and Dow have established LCA filing histories for chemical engineering and materials science roles, making them worth researching when targeting E-3 sponsorship.
Which cities in California have the most chemicals and materials E-3 sponsorship jobs?
San Jose and the broader Silicon Valley corridor lead for semiconductor and advanced materials roles, driven by the concentration of chip equipment manufacturers. Los Angeles and Long Beach support refining and petrochemical positions. San Diego has a growing specialty chemicals and biotech materials cluster. Richmond and the East Bay are also active, home to several large refinery and industrial chemical operations with international hiring histories.
What types of chemicals and materials roles typically qualify for E-3 sponsorship?
Roles that regularly qualify include chemical engineers, process engineers, materials scientists, polymer chemists, quality assurance chemists, and R&D chemists. The E-3 requires a specialty occupation, meaning the position must normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as chemical engineering, chemistry, or materials science. General technician or lab assistant roles that accept any science degree often face greater scrutiny during the LCA and visa assessment process.
How do I find chemicals and materials E-3 sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for employers with verified E-3 LCA filing histories, so you can focus on California chemicals and materials companies that have sponsored Australian workers before. Rather than sorting through thousands of generic postings, you can search by occupation and location to surface roles where E-3 sponsorship is an established part of the hiring process, saving significant research time.
Are there any California-specific considerations for chemicals and materials E-3 sponsorship?
California's stringent environmental and air quality regulations mean employers in refining, coatings, and industrial chemicals often seek candidates with compliance and process safety backgrounds, which can strengthen a specialty occupation argument. California also requires employers to post the LCA at the worksite, and some multisite operations must file separate LCAs for each location. Roles at UC system research facilities may qualify under cap-exempt rules, though E-3 has no annual cap regardless.
What is the prevailing wage for E-3 chemicals & materials jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
