Discovery, Paramount Global, Sony Pictures, NBCUniversal, and Activision Blizzard. Streaming platforms and gaming studios in Los Angeles and the Bay Area are among the most active sponsors, particularly for engineering, data analytics, and product development roles.
Which cities in California have the most media & entertainment F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs?
Los Angeles accounts for the largest share of media and entertainment STEM OPT sponsorship jobs in California, driven by its concentration of studios, streaming companies, and post-production firms. San Francisco and the broader Bay Area are significant for tech-adjacent roles at platforms like Netflix and gaming companies. San Diego has a growing gaming and interactive media cluster as well.
What types of media & entertainment roles typically qualify for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship?
Roles that regularly qualify include software engineer, data scientist, machine learning engineer, product analyst, systems engineer, visual effects technical director, and platform engineer. These positions fall under STEM-designated Classification of Instructional Programs codes, meaning the underlying degree must be STEM-classified. Creative-only roles such as writer, director, or talent agent typically do not qualify, as STEM OPT requires both a qualifying degree and a qualifying occupational category.

Are there state-specific or industry-specific considerations for F-1 STEM OPT in California media & entertainment?
California's entertainment industry is heavily unionized, and some creative roles are governed by guild agreements that may affect hiring timelines and role classifications. For STEM OPT specifically, the role must be paid and directly related to your STEM degree, and your employer must be E-Verify enrolled, which is a federal requirement regardless of state. California's own employment laws, including strict worker classification rules, can also affect how studios structure internships versus full-time STEM OPT positions.
