Which companies sponsor visas for interns in California?
Large technology employers including Google, Apple, Meta, and Salesforce have established international intern programs with visa sponsorship support, primarily in the Bay Area. Biotech and life sciences companies such as Genentech and Gilead Sciences sponsor interns in South San Francisco and San Diego. Aerospace and defense firms in Southern California, including Northrop Grumman and Raytheon, also sponsor international interns in engineering disciplines.
Which visa types are most common for intern roles in California?
Most international interns in California work under F-1 OPT or CPT authorization, which allows students enrolled at U.S. universities to gain practical work experience without requiring employer-sponsored visa petitions. J-1 visa Exchange Visitor visas, administered through a designated sponsor organization, are also common for structured internship programs. H-1B visa sponsorship for intern-level roles is rare and typically only applies when an intern transitions into a full-time position.
Which cities in California have the most intern sponsorship jobs?
The San Francisco Bay Area, including San Jose, Sunnyvale, and Mountain View, concentrates the greatest number of intern sponsorship opportunities, driven by the technology industry. Los Angeles follows, with internships spanning entertainment, media technology, and aerospace. San Diego has a strong presence in biotech and defense, while Sacramento offers opportunities in state government technology projects and agricultural technology firms.
How to find intern visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate filters intern roles in California specifically to employers that sponsor visas, saving you from sorting through listings that exclude international candidates. Search by city or industry on Migrate Mate to focus on Bay Area tech internships, San Diego biotech roles, or Los Angeles media and entertainment positions. Filtering by sponsorship type also helps F-1 students identify CPT and OPT-eligible opportunities alongside J-1 and H-1B positions.
Are there California-specific factors that affect intern visa sponsorship?
California's concentration of large, well-resourced employers means many companies already have immigration counsel and established processes for supporting international interns. Universities including UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, and UCSD feed substantial international student pipelines into California internship programs, making local employers more familiar with F-1 CPT and OPT requirements than employers in other states. California's prevailing wage requirements under state law can also affect how intern compensation is structured by sponsoring employers.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored intern jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
