Which companies sponsor visas for professional engineers in California?
Large engineering and technology employers in California with documented visa sponsorship histories include Bechtel, Jacobs Engineering, AECOM, Google, Apple, Intel, Northrop Grumman, and Lockheed Martin. Infrastructure, semiconductor, and defense contractors are particularly active sponsors. Smaller engineering consultancies also sponsor, though less frequently. Checking a company's H-1B visa Labor Condition Application filings through the Department of Labor's public disclosure data is a reliable way to confirm past sponsorship activity.
Which visa types are most common for professional engineer roles in California?
The H-1B is the most common visa for professional engineers in California, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in engineering. Engineers from Canada and Mexico may qualify for the TN visa under the USMCA. Australian nationals with relevant degrees can pursue the E-3 visa. Those with extraordinary achievement may qualify for O-1 visa. Each category has distinct eligibility requirements and employer obligations.
Which cities in California have the most professional engineer sponsorship jobs?
San Jose and the broader Silicon Valley corridor lead in software and electrical engineering sponsorship roles. Los Angeles is the center for aerospace, civil, and structural engineering positions, particularly tied to defense contractors and infrastructure projects. San Francisco sees strong demand in systems and environmental engineering. San Diego has a concentrated cluster of biomedical, defense, and telecommunications engineering employers that regularly sponsor international candidates.
How to find professional engineer visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate lists professional engineer roles in California from employers with verified visa sponsorship histories, so you can filter specifically for sponsored positions rather than applying broadly and asking later. Search by engineering discipline and California city to narrow results. Because PE-licensed roles and specialty occupation engineering jobs attract significant international interest, filtering by sponsorship status from the start saves considerable time in your job search.
Are there state-specific considerations for professional engineers seeking visa sponsorship in California?
California requires Professional Engineer licensure through the California Board for Professional Engineers for certain regulated engineering work, which is separate from your immigration status. Employers sponsoring H-1B petitions must pay the prevailing wage as determined by Department of Labor data for the specific role and location, and California's high cost-of-living metros like San Francisco and San Jose typically have higher prevailing wage thresholds than national averages. PE licensure reciprocity from other states is recognized but California has its own exam requirements.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professional engineer jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
