Which companies sponsor visas for structural project engineers in Hawaii?
Firms with documented sponsorship histories for structural engineering roles in Hawaii include AECOM, Jacobs, and Parsons, which hold significant federal and state infrastructure contracts on Oahu. Smaller local firms such as Wilson Okamoto Corporation and PBR Hawaii occasionally sponsor for specialized roles. Federal contractors working on Navy and Army Corps of Engineers projects at Pearl Harbor and Hickam represent another consistent source of sponsorship.
Which visa types are most common for structural project engineer roles in Hawaii?
The H-1B is the most widely used visa for structural project engineers in Hawaii, as the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in civil or structural engineering. Some candidates with Canadian or Mexican citizenship pursue TN status under USMCA. Engineers with extraordinary ability or significant international recognition may be eligible for the O-1A, though this is far less common in the structural engineering field.
How to find structural project engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Hawaii?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to search for structural project engineer roles in Hawaii without sorting through positions that don't offer sponsorship. Because Hawaii's engineering market is smaller than mainland hubs, setting up alerts on Migrate Mate for Honolulu-based postings from federal contractors and civil engineering firms gives you an early look at openings before they fill.
Which cities in Hawaii have the most structural project engineer sponsorship jobs?
Honolulu accounts for the overwhelming majority of structural project engineer positions in Hawaii, driven by the Honolulu Rail Transit project, state DOT infrastructure work, and the concentration of federal defense facilities on Oahu. Hilo on the Big Island has a smaller but active market tied to University of Hawaii facilities and county infrastructure. Other islands see occasional project-based openings but rarely sustain full-time sponsored positions.
Are there state-specific considerations for structural project engineers seeking sponsorship in Hawaii?
Hawaii requires structural engineers to hold a Professional Engineer license issued by the Hawaii Board of Professional Engineers, which international candidates must factor into their timeline alongside visa processing. The state's seismic and high-wind design requirements mean employers often prefer candidates with experience in ASCE 7 loading conditions specific to Pacific island contexts. The University of Hawaii at Manoa's engineering program also serves as a local pipeline, so familiarity with its research partnerships can be an advantage when approaching Honolulu firms.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored structural project engineer jobs in Hawaii?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
