Which companies sponsor visas for occupational therapists in Illinois?
The largest sponsors in Illinois tend to be major health systems and rehabilitation providers. Northwestern Medicine, Rush University Medical Center, Advocate Aurora Health, and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago have documented histories of sponsoring occupational therapists. Smaller outpatient clinics and school districts also sponsor, though less frequently. Sponsorship activity is strongest among employers with dedicated HR and legal teams experienced in H-1B visa and EB-3 petitions.
Which visa types are most common for occupational therapist roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is the most common visa for occupational therapists in Illinois, as the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a master's degree in occupational therapy. The EB-3 immigrant visa is also a common pathway, particularly for employers willing to sponsor permanent residence through PERM labor certification. Some OTs on TN visa status (Canadian and Mexican nationals) also work in Illinois under that USMCA category.
Which cities in Illinois have the most occupational therapist sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the large majority of occupational therapist sponsorship opportunities in Illinois, driven by its concentration of academic medical centers, rehabilitation hospitals, and pediatric facilities. The suburbs of Evanston, Oak Park, and Naperville also have active hiring through regional health systems. Outside the metro area, Peoria and Springfield have hospital-based OT roles, though sponsorship is less common in those markets.
How to find occupational therapist visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters occupational therapist roles in Illinois by visa sponsorship availability. Rather than sorting through postings that don't confirm sponsorship, Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have sponsored OT positions in the past. This is particularly useful for targeting Chicago-area health systems and rehabilitation centers where sponsorship activity is most concentrated.
Are there state-specific requirements that affect visa sponsorship for occupational therapists in Illinois?
Yes. Illinois requires occupational therapists to hold a state license issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation before practicing, and employers must confirm licensure as part of the hiring process. NBCOT certification is a prerequisite for licensure. Sponsors filing H-1B petitions must also meet the Department of Labor's prevailing wage requirements for OT roles in the specific Illinois metropolitan area where the position is located.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored occupational therapist jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
