Which companies sponsor visas for professional engineers in Illinois?
Large engineering and infrastructure firms are the most consistent sponsors in Illinois. Companies like AECOM, Jacobs, Burns & McDonnell, and Commonwealth Edison (Exelon) have established H-1B sponsorship track records. Major manufacturers in the Chicago metro and Peoria areas, including Caterpillar's engineering divisions, also sponsor PEs. Consulting engineering firms with federal contracts tend to sponsor more frequently than smaller regional practices.
Which visa types are most common for professional engineer roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is the most common visa for professional engineers in Illinois, as PE roles typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering. Canadians and Mexicans may qualify for the TN visa under the NAFTA/USMCA engineer category without going through the H-1B lottery. Engineers with exceptional credentials may also pursue the O-1A, and some multinational firms transfer senior PEs via L-1 visas.
Which cities in Illinois have the most professional engineer sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the large majority of PE sponsorship activity in Illinois, driven by its concentration of infrastructure consultancies, utility companies, and construction firms. The suburbs along the I-88 and I-90 corridors, including Schaumburg, Naperville, and Downers Grove, host engineering centers for manufacturing and technology firms. Peoria is notable for heavy equipment engineering tied to Caterpillar, and Rockford has aerospace and industrial engineering employers.
How to find professional engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters professional engineer roles in Illinois by visa sponsorship status, saving you from sifting through postings where sponsorship isn't offered. Beyond browsing Migrate Mate, targeting employers with a documented H-1B filing history in Illinois engineering disciplines, such as civil, structural, and mechanical, improves your odds significantly. Prioritizing firms with active federal or state infrastructure contracts is a practical starting point.
Are there state-specific considerations for professional engineers seeking sponsorship in Illinois?
Illinois requires a state PE license from the Illinois Design Firm Registration program for engineers of record on public projects, which is separate from your visa status but relevant to employers vetting candidates. Prevailing wage requirements apply to federally funded infrastructure projects, which means sponsored PEs on those contracts must be paid at DOL-determined wage levels. Illinois's active IDOT and water infrastructure pipeline creates steady demand for civil and environmental PEs in particular.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professional engineer jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
