Which companies sponsor visas for professional engineers in Pennsylvania?
Engineering consulting firms are among the most active sponsors in Pennsylvania. Companies like AECOM, WSP, Jacobs, and Burns & McDonnell have a consistent track record of filing H-1B petitions for licensed engineers. Utilities such as PECO and PPL Corporation, along with large infrastructure contractors working on state transportation and energy projects, also sponsor professional engineers with some regularity.
Which visa types are most common for professional engineer roles in Pennsylvania?
The H-1B is the most common visa for professional engineers in Pennsylvania, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in engineering. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for the TN visa under the USMCA, which has a simpler process for engineers. Australian citizens should explore the E-3 visa, which functions similarly to the H-1B but operates outside the annual lottery.
How to find professional engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Pennsylvania?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find professional engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Pennsylvania. The platform filters listings specifically to employers who sponsor work visas, so you're not sifting through postings from companies that don't. Focus your search on Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and the Lehigh Valley, where engineering consulting, infrastructure, and energy sector hiring is most concentrated for internationally sponsored roles.
Which cities in Pennsylvania have the most professional engineer sponsorship jobs?
Philadelphia leads the state for professional engineer sponsorship volume, driven by its dense cluster of civil and environmental engineering firms serving the Northeast corridor's infrastructure needs. Pittsburgh follows closely, particularly in structural, mechanical, and energy engineering tied to the city's industrial base and university research ecosystem. The Lehigh Valley and Harrisburg corridor also show meaningful sponsorship activity, especially in transportation and utilities.
Are there state-specific considerations for international professional engineers in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania requires a Professional Engineer license issued by the State Registration Board for Professional Engineers to use the P.E. designation or sign and seal engineering documents. International engineers typically need to have foreign credentials evaluated for equivalency before pursuing licensure. Many employers in Pennsylvania will sponsor your visa before you hold a P.E. license, particularly for roles where a licensed P.E. of record can supervise your work.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professional engineer jobs in Pennsylvania?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
